Castle Dale, Utah Tuesday April 13, 1999 Buckhorn Flat Railroad Grade, another Heritage Site We have a nch heritage here m Emery County, a hentage we are extremely proud of But, in order to preserve what we have, we must pull together, work together, stand firm together Work was recently completed to protect hentage features at the Copper Globe Mine area Another site, portions of the old narrow-gagD&RG Buckhorn Flat railroad grade, has been identified as deserving and needing protection Construction of this spur of the D&RG railroad was started in 1881 The route was to follow along the south side of Cedar Mountain to the Castle Valley Junction, near Cleveland At this point, one branch would run north to Price and Salt Lake, with a second branch running south to Salma Canyon and eventually to California Construction of the Salma Canyon grade included several tunnels Eighty kilometers of grade were built between Green River and Cleveland, however, no track was ever laid Work on the portion of grade from Cleveland to Salma Canyon was never started Historic accounts, speculation and lore regarding the reasons for the abandonment of the Buckhorn Flat grade have created a mystique about what is often referred to as the Spint e Railroad.
