Show 8A Emery County Progress, Castle Dale, Utah Tuesday January 19, 1999 Letters to the editor Doris Quinn Editor Progress Looking for Utah history Progress continuing efforts to improve quality have been working hard here at the Progress adjusting to our new jobs, remodeling our office and in general taking care of the newspaper. It has been a lot of work but we have an office that we are proud to have our customers come into, we have organized ourselves so that we can be more efficient, and as far as the newspaper goes I believe that we have pretty well arrived at the look we want the Progress to have. Now we plan to add a few new features to the newspaper. Beginning next week we will start including district and juvenile court reports every other week. Plans are underway to revive the sheriffs log on those weeks We also. City council reports will also be included in the paper. This will run on the weeks the court reports and sheriffs log does not run. We are meeting with the cities at the present time to work out the details. We are also looking for material to include in a Kids Corner section. I have been told by some of our readers that their children read the paper also. I am hoping to find cartoons, coloring pages, puzzles and other such things that will entertain children as well as educate them. Our goal is to produce a newspaper that will appeal to every one of our readers of all ages. have been having some problems with subscriptions lately. Some of our readers have not been receiving their papers, others have been put on the expired list although they have not actually expired, and other types of problems have come up too. If you have a problem with your subscription please call the Sun Advocate, and ask to toll free speak to Darla. She is over all the subscriptions for the Emery County Progress and the Sun Advocate and we have to call her whenever there are questions concerning subscriptions because we have no subscription records here at our office. Darla will be happy to help remedy the problem. If she cannot do what is necessary to solve the problem then please call us. All you need to do is explain what is needed and we will be happy to assist you. We can look up receipts if you made your payment at our office or we can make arrangements to get you a newspaper if you did not receive yours provided your subscription is not expired. We are also planning some series of articles this year. Practically each month of the year has been designated as an awareness month of some kind, i.e. National Eye Care Month, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Heart Awareness Month, Nutrition Awareness Month, Diabetes Aware We Crime Prevention: ness Month, etc.. We will strive to provide articles that coincide with the different themes. We will also do a series of articles that affect the local citizens such as the illegal dumping series and others. We are always willing to consider any articles that our readers suggest and we love to print articles written by local people that are of interest to others. Which brings us to news tips. We need news tips. This time of year things are pretty slow as far as events to cover and report about. Any suggestions or tips you have are always appreciated, especially now when local activities are so few. We have closed our Emery County Person of the Year contest. We will highlight the winner in the Feb. 2 edition. The person will also receive a plaque provided by Hansen Plaque & Trophy of Cleveland, and a one year subscription to the Emery County Progress. We only received one nomination so it was very easy to make the selection, but in my opinion this person really does deserve the recognition of Emery County Person of the Year. This contest is real, we do not determine who will be named our readers determine it. Next year we look forward to even more participation from our readers. Its No Laughing Matter AARP 1995. A Public Service Presentation Dear Editor, In my eighth grade social studies-clasin Chicago, we are studying United States history. One of our assignment is to write a research paper about a particular state and how it relates to the history of the country. I have chosen Utah as the subject of my research.in-I would like to learn about dividuals from Utah, or events that involved Utah or oc- curred in the states that played an important part in U. S. History. I would very much appreciate if people would send me items that would be of inter- est. Post cards, newspaper with unique products from your region, or other items that might help geography and history to come alive in my classroom. We are to present a report to the class and anything es- pecially interesting would make my report the best in the class. Please help me learn about your state and spark the interest of my classmates. Besides, everyone enjoys getting (K-8- ). Most of our students are either immigrants or children of recent immigrants. We have students from many parts of the world Mexico. Bulgaria, Korea, Nigeria, India, Bosnia, Vietnam, Guate- mala, the Philippines, and many other places. Most of the students have not lived outside Chicago. I was born in Chicago. In vacations I like to go to Mexico and visit my family. I like to play soccer and chill with my friends. I like to study in the library. My favorite food is pizza. I look forward to receiving mail from you. Thank you for your interest in my education and your kindness. Alejandro Mavo, Room 103. 2701 W. As a small com- munity paper with a small staff we appreciate contributions from the public. Submissions make the paper more interesting and make our jobs a lot easier. In an effort to increase the professional appearance of the paper and overall efficiency, the staff of the Progress would like to put forth the following guidelines for submissions and tips for reproduced), black and white, good focus and contrast and do not require enlargement. Not too many people use black and white film anymore, so good color photos are fine. Reproduc- tions such as computer thief is less likely to take property that has been marked by the owner. For our purposes, the best photos are original (not A Our school is on the northern side of Chicago, about six printouts or wedding invitations make our production third generation and greatly decreases quality. A second thing to watch out for is images that are too small. If we to have your pull missionarys face out of the distance from a snapshot there isnt much detail left when we get it to the size we need. We want pictures of your family members to look good as much as you do so please be selective when bringing them in. Guidelines for articles: We love submissions from the public news stories, feature stories, letters, guest columns, etc. The paper is also a great forum for public debate of local issues we welcome debate of controversial issues so long as the argu ments stay focused on the issues. Submissions that have been carefully edited make our job easier and can be turned in on floppy disk, typed, faxed or handwritten (in order of our preference). One of the most difficult decisions we have to make at the paper is what constitutes a public submission versus what should be paid advertising. Please help us by making that determination on your own as much as possible and not put us in the position of having to turn down your submission because it belongs m the advertising category. We have to follow certain guicielun s set forth by our publisher as to what constitutes one or the other. Tips for improved service: Due to the fact that much of our administrative, advertising and circulation functions are centralized at the Sun Advocate offices m Price, we offer the following tips to improve your service. Bring submissions tor the Progress directly to our office rather than the Sun Advocate. This decreases the chance of something getting lost in the shuffle. If you want your submission to run in both papers please inform our office as well as the Sun Advocate. Our subscription data- base is maintained at the Sun Advocate, if you are having problems receiving your newspaper please contact e at (888) them directly If this doesn't your problem feel tree to contact us at and we will be more than happy toll-fre- 637-073- ic-sol- 381-243- 1 to help you. ww win Him i mu sjWHtaa Emery County Home Made Paula Wellnitz, Progress Columnist Acceptance comes by listening carefully to others The last two weeks in Home Made ceptance does not mean I necessarily is not time to say, I dont really unI have been referring to the household understand why a person feels that derstand why.
