Last Saturday (Nov. 1), the Spartans proved that they had what it takes to get the job done and to get it done right as they defeated the Pine View Panthers in the first round ofthe 3A state tournament, 54-2- 0. Emery finished in first place in Region 8 and therefore has the home-fieladvantage for its first two rounds of the state tournament. After the team lost its first three preseason games it rallied back to win six in a row, to finish the regular season with a 3 record and the region championship. Last Saturday the fans began to fill the stands around 1 1 a.m. even though the game didnt start until 1 p.m. Many fans even arrived at the school as e early as 10 a.m. for a and tailgate party that took place in the student parking lot. But when the game started, it was pure determination to win from the players, the coaches, and the fans. Emery started the game by receiving and within minutes, Benny Grimm had scored a ' touchdown to put the first six points of the game on the The crowd roared with excitement as Emery gained this early lead in the game. Brian Gillson fared well as he made the first tackle of the game and showed Pine View that the Spartans were determined to win. At the end of the first quarter the score was In the seco Ad quarter, Grimm scored four touchdowns with three successful kicks being made by Dustin Peay, bringing the score to 33-- 0 at the end of the second quarter. During halftime the spotlight was taken off of the players for a moment and placed on the Spardettes as they performed a dance routine to the musical number Yesterday. As the players reentered the field, the d 54-2- 0, coaches Jimmy Jones, Eric Mortensen, and Kenny Jones seemed to be very pleased. Kenny Jones was quoted as saying, Hard work pays off, thats all I can say," while Eric Mortensen said that, The offensive line has been the key to it all for us, theyve been great This was a great game, the players played hard and we keep getting better and better every week, stated coach Jimmy Jones.
