These students were the winners of the D AR.E. Eco-Challen- ge essay contest which made them an honor- ary member of the team. All students will meet in Castle Dale for lunch. There was some doubt about the race actually getting underway this week due to complaints filed by environmental groups. However, the United States Interior Board of Land Appeals rejected appeals and the race was given the final approval. Race promoters say the competition will host 55, d teams. Each team pays a $7,500 entry fee to run, bicycle, ride horse, scale cliffs, challenge river rapids and canoe the windy course through eastern and southern Utah. The environmental impact study conducted by the BLM adjusted the original route so racers will essentially follow existing roads, wash bottoms, trails and waterways. It also restricts the use of helicopters and crews from filming archaeological sites and the use of maps to show scenic locations.
