Show 4A Emery County Progress Tuesday, March 28, 1995 PERSPECTIVE Forumi No pay increase To the editor: During the past legislative session, it was reported that state workers received a 4 percent compensation package. This representation is a farce. Over 2,500 state workers will receive no pay increase from this package because they are in longevity- - a station designating senior, experienced status but without benefit of enhanced compensation. These people are just like every citizen of Utah. They have families. They are diligent, dedicated workers and they have been neglected. Tn fact, other state workers have only been granted a 2.75 percent increase in pay iftheir performance is satisfactory to their supervisors. If you have a family member or a neighbor who is a state employee, ask him or her directly, "How much of a pay increase will you see from the 4 percent compensation pack- - Bulletin board Bulletin board policy Calendar The Emery County Progress welcomes your bulletin board items for publication. USSC said they "contacted both the LDS church security and church public information offices, and has learned that the LDS church has taken NO OFFICIAL POSITION regarding any firearms legislation before the legislature." The founder of the LDS church, Joseph Smith, had deep feelings about the Constitution. He declared that it was inspired by Almighty God. He believed, "...that law of the land which is constitutional, supporting that principle of freedom in maintaining rights and privileges, belongs to all 5. Their excessive zeal for one aspect of patriotism is causing them to risk spiritual downfall." (October 1994 Ensign page 17) Words like these of Dallin Oaks have caused some of us deep concern, wondering what the LDS churchs new official position really is on the constitutional right to bear arms. We contacted Chris Vanoccur of KTVX Channel 4 News and asked him if the church had asked for a retraction of their reported concerns. Since 4 News had aired the segment on the church twice, this should have given the church ample opportunity to see or at least hear of the report and if it was incorrectly reported, surely the church would have approached 4 News and requested a retraction over such an important issue, if they had in fact been misrepresented. Chris Vanoccur assured us that the church had made no attempt to contact him and that his report was accurate and his sources very reliable. We find the fact that USSC contacted the church and the church itself stated that it had NO OFFICIAL POSITION is of greater concern to us than the reported concerns over the Conceal Carry law. Proclaiming that they have NO OFFICIAL POSITION is perhaps considered to be wise politics by church leaders, but what would happen if we were all to follow their example and proclaim this as our position? Surely it would be a great victory to the gun controllers. Joseph Smith prophesied that the day would come "when the Constitution would hand by a thread." Some of us believe that part of the thread he prophesied of, is the right to bear arms, the thin line that guarantees and protects our other rights. Of course our feeling that these rights are being threatened and even lost to the highest extend of late, may not be shared by the leaders of the LDS church. After all, their motto of late as repeated numerous times on television has been: "All 'is well and all will always be well." (Howard W. Hunter, June 4, 1994, as shown on 2, 4, 5 news and reiterated partici-Employe- many times es at Howard Hunter's death and once again quoted by Thomas Monson at the funeral services.) It is interesting that they would use this particular phrase to describe the state of things in Zion. MostMormons are aware that the phrase ALL IS WELL was the forbidden phrase from the Book of Mormon. An ancient prophet named Nephi while prophesyso-call- ed ing about the latter-day- s warned, "...they will say: ALL IS WELL IN ZION; yea, Zion prospereth, ALLIS WELL, and thus the devil cheateth their souls, and leadeth them away carefully down to hell... Therefore, woe be unto him that is at ease in Zion!" 2 Nephi 28:21,25. Webelieve that many Utahns consider the right to bear arms as the right which defends and maintains all other constitutional rights. It's sad, but history proves that as soon as a tyrannical, overtaxing government could enslave the people, th ey did. Hitler , Stalin and Mao Tse Tung all knew that gun control works. When Britain demanded their citizens in America surrender their guns, these citizens kept their guns and became free men, and along the way gained the insight that free men must maintain this right in order to main- tain their freedom.
