Human ailments may be caused or worsened by disturbances of the nervous system. This complex system includes the brain, spinal cord, nerves, eyes and ears. The spine alone contains 33 bones. The discs separate the vertebrae which protect the spinal cord and peripheral nerves. When spinal bones or vertebrae become misaligned, the transmission of tiie nerve supply to various parts of the body becomes inhibited. The doctor of chiropractic locates and corrects spinal misalignment through spinal physical and electrical therapy, ice, heat and intermittent traction. Once pain is alleviated, he seeks to convert the individual to a lifestyle of healthful living and preventive care. Dr. Sanders favors a holisitic approach to his practice. Holism is the theory that reality is made up of organic or unified wholes which are greater than the simple sum of their parts. Holistics emphasizes the importance of tiie whole and interdependence of its parts. The doctor is skilled in recognizing illness caused by physical impairment and illness brought on by emotional and physical stress. The mind and d and the body are emotions may cause ulcers, headaches, sleeplessness and heart palpitations which are not organic in origin. These problems are no less real and painful than those with physical adjustment, inter-relate- origins. In 1983 poet Mildred Breedlove sought help from Dr. Sanders. She was experiencing pain between her shoulder blades that 10 medical doctors had failed to ease. A friend prevailed upon her to try chiropractic. After five treatments for a disc problem, the pain was gone and has never returned. Later, Mildred pulled a cartilage in her hip which also responded to treatment. I think he can do just about anything, she says. Elderly patients benefit from therapy to increase mobility. Half the battle of staying healthy in later years is to remain mobile, maintains the doctor. Children, starting with newborns, benefit from early examination to prevent curvature of the spine. Early care of numerous childhood injuries can prevent problems in later years. Young children need postural training. The doctor advises parents to check childrens shoulders to see if they are even. Limping and humping the shoulders are signals that a child may require professional care. Scoliosis can be arrested if detected early; to progress into adulthood the victim may face surgery or wheelchair confinement. Many times recurrent ear infection can be caused from underlying weakness or nerve imbalance, tearing down immunity. Medication usually only keeps the infection in abeyance for a time.
