More important than the fact that the championship game will be played in Orem is the fact that the Emery Spartans will be in it. After opening the 2A tournament with wins over Union and San Juan, the Spartans met the Cowboys from Region 9 in a game which was dominated by offense in the early going, and defense in the late going. Those who may have gotten lost in the Utah Valley traffic and ended up late at the game, may have missed all the scoring by both teams. Emery scored the first three times it had the ball while Grantsville scored on its second possession. That was it for the offense well, there were some other exciting offensive moments in the game, but none led to any scoring. Grantsville got an early taste of the talented Emery defense when on the second play from scrimmage, defensive back Cody Allred came up to stop running back Dennis Gilbert for a loss to the 16. He then provided pass coverage on the next play as a short pass fell incompete and the Cowboys were forced to punt. Emery fans have come to expect this season, the Spartans took the ball at their own 43 and As immediately began to move. Joel Wilson carried twice for a gain to the Grantsville 4C, and then quarterback Jeff Cisneros hit wide receiver Scott Stilson for a gain to the 16. Two plays later Cisneros went to the air again and found Dell Stilson 38-ya- rd open in the end zone for the score. The receiver did a good job to catch the ball and keep both feet inbounds. Jacob Christensen, who was three for three in PAT kicks on the day, booted the extra point to put Emery on top 0 at the 7: 20 mark. 7-- However, the Spartans didnt have long to enjoy that lead. On the second play of their next possession the Cowboys scored run by Gilbert. He on a took a handoff off tackle to his right, found running room and got by a pair of Emery defenders for the score. The conversion of the PAT tied the score with 6:23 left in the first at rd 77 quarter. But Emery came right back with another score. After taking possession at the Spartan 33, Cisneros connected with Devin Arnold on a passing play good for 38 yards and a gain to the Cowboy 39. Cisneros came back with consecutive pass completions to Dell Stilson to the right and left sides to move the Spartans to the 21. Wilson then took a handoff to the left side for a gain to the 11. from that to the went point, Cisneros again in Stilon Scott the air and hit middle of the end zone for the score. The PAT made it 0 at the 4:17 mark of the first On first and 10 14-- quarter. Although looked like Grantsville might come back with another touchdown, the Emery defense got a big break when Dell Stilson pulled down an interception at the Emery 11 as the first quarter came to an it end. That set up Emerys third touchdown and the final score of the game. Pass completions to Dell Stilson and runs by Wilson moved Emery to the Grantsville 37. Cisneros then hit Steven Jorgensen for a gain to the 31 and came back with a pass to Dell Stilson to put Emery at the 13. After failing to move the ball on the next two plays, Emery again found success when Cisneros went to the air and found Jorgensen open in the left corner of the end zone. The coversion put the score at 7 with 7 : 28 to go in the half. Grantsvilles next drive ended like the one before it. A third 21-- down pass over the middle was inercepted by Jorgensen who took the ball in at midfield and returned it to the Cowboy 37 before being stopped. Emerys possession didnt last long, however, because Cisneros next pass was intercepted, giving Grantsville the ball at the Cowboy 26. At that point, Emery held and forced a punt, but the offensive unit was stopped again on an interception which gave the ball back to the Cowboys at their own 35. Although time was running out, the Cowboys showed signs of moving the ball. However, pressure by Darrin Halliday and a sack by Brett Sandstrom ended the drive as time ran out in the first half. Emerys first possession of the second half ended like the last two of the first half, with an interception. But the Spartans stopped the Cowboys on a fourth and inches as Halliday stacked up the middle. Although Emery failed to score on the next possession, it did move the ball and ate up a lot of time doing so. Emery moved from the Spartan 38 to the Grantsville 34 before being stopped on downs. That gave Grantsville the ball, but the fourth quarter was about to get underway. The Cowboys stayed on the ground and moved all the way to the Emery 11, but then Sandstrom and Mark Allen combined to stop a running play for a loss while Jorgensen offered excellent coverage on a pass play to set up a fourth and 14. However, a pass into the end zone fell incomplete as Allred covered the receiver. Again Emery was forced to punt just four plays later, and Grantsville was off on another drive which began at the Cowboy 45. This time the drive was slowed down on a Shane Trapp sack and was completely stopped on an interception by Devin Arnold who retuned the ball to the Spartan 41. Emery combined a running and passing attack at that point to move to the Cowboy eight but failed to score. Grantsville got the ball back with just over a minute to play, but on first down, Dell Stilson got his second interception and gave Emery the ball at the Grantsville 37. After that, Cisneros needed just two plays to run the time out. |
