Show Emery County EEA votes 89-4- 3 grads come back on 86 pact Members of the Emery County Education Association voted Monday night to sign contracts offered by the school district rather than sign a letter of intent to continue work in the district under terms of last years contract. In a 1 vote, the teachers decided to sign contracts for the 1986-6school year and accept the 2 percent salary increase offered by the district. Prior to the vote, the teachers discussed a movement supported by the Utah Education Association as well as local Nearly 500 graduates of Castle Dales Central High School and the Emery Stake Academy gathered Saturday for a day of reminiscing and renewing old acquaintances. The reunion, which has been in the planning stages for several months, finally came off Saturday as the 27-2- alumni gathered in the Castle Dale park. The pavilion was filled with hundreds of visitors to the area as well as many local residents who enjoyed meeting again after many years. At the park, signs designating graduating classes were handed out as alumni from those years got into proper formation for a arade around the town. The jarade featured Kent Jensen on he drums and Owen on the paddle. That paddle was also used in he reenactment of a scene amiliar to many of the former students. At least one race will be decided before it reaches the November general election while several other races will be narrowed to candidates are from the same party. County Clerk Bruce Funk and his challenger Bryan Clements are each on the ballot as Democrats. Since there is no Republican candidate for the office, the winner in the primary will be the winner of that office. This, however, is not the case in the other races. In the two candidates. The primary election will select a single candidate in both the Republican and Democratic parties for several county county commission race, Democrats Ross V. Gordon and Jerry D. Mangum are on the primary ballot with the winner to advance into the November general election. That winner will face the winner of the Republican primary election, either Joe Harvey or O. After serving Emery County is assessor for 16 years, Gerald s retiring and leaving a job he njoyed a great deal. Gerald has lived in Emery bounty some 48 years. He carried Phyllis Singleton in larch of 1939. Emery County teachers recently received contracts from the district, each reflecting a 2 percent salary increase which is the amount of new money coming into the district from the state. However, it was pointed out that while the Legislature did appropriate a 2 percent increase in this areas, other programs have been cut or eliminated from the public school system. Gerald has worked as a butcher, painter and a school bus driver, a job he did for 21 years. Gerald and Phyllis purchased the family store which now houses South Hollow Variety in Ferron. When Gerald became the county assessor, Phyllis continued to mind the store. Phyllis was born and raised in Ferron. Her parents were Morris and May Singleton. Phyllis has served as Relief Society president and has been for candidates treasurer. DAVIS Progress editor There is a lot on the line in association throughout Utah which calls for teachers to refrain from signing contracts until districts can offer a 3.2 percent increase as well as other benefits. That plan, however, does not call for the withholding of past president, Private Industry Council member, president of the Utah Assessors Association and serves on the board of directors of the Utah ,4 Association of Counties. Gerald has been honored as the 1983 Utah Assessor of the Year. When asked what hell do after retirement, Gerald said, Hunt, fish, do yardwork and take care of Phyllis. Gerald once told Phyllis, Well retire and move To which Phyllis remarked, But theres no place wed rather be. Gerald has enjoyed being the assessor and especially the people. And the people of Emery County have especially enjoyed somewhere. the Stantons. The parade will have other highlights as well. The parade will feature the Utah Highway Patrol Motorcycle Drill Squad from Salt Lake City and Donna 4 Phyllis and Gerald Stanton will be the grand marshals in the 1986 Emery County Fair parade this Saturday. Clark, Miss Utah. A number of entries from Carbon County will be featured including the Miss Carbon County royalty, Carbon County Rodeo royalty and the Carbon High Drill Team. Also highlighted be will celebrities: Miss local Emery County, Wendy Law; National High School Bullriding Champion, Guy Allred; Miss CEU, Juley Atwood along with other queens and royalty. This parade promises to be the best and largest parade ever. The committee would love to see the route crowded with the good Emery County people. |
