After high school graduation in 1925, Jennie found a Job as a telephone operator in Salt Lake. A year later her folks gave up the farm and returned to the city. They had not realized the necessity of having cattle as a cash crop and lacked the funds to start a herd. Fred had worked at odd jobs while the family ran the farm. Milton returned home March 5, 1928, and they were married three days later. Jennie sold her stock in the telephone company for $57 and bought a new treadle Singer sewing machine. It was moved into their first home, a house at 100 East 200 North in Huntington. Jennie washed on the board until three months before Janece was born. She was thrilled to own an electric washing machine equipped with wringer, but washday was still a task. She drew the water from the single faucet in the kitchen, bucketed it into the boiler on the stove, then filled up the boiler again to boil whites.
