Davis Progress Editor The Region 13 basketball war began last week, and the Emery Spartans won the first battle with a whipping of the Monticello Buckaroos on the ECHS court. A fine fourth quarter performance by the Spartans turned a close game into an easy win for Emery which outscored the Bucks 2 in the final eight minutes. 60-4- 3 5pbj I 21-1- f Three Emery players reached double figures in the game although the team maintained a well balanced scoring attack. Senior Curt DeFriez led the Spartan scoring with 12 points as he scored early and late in the V game while guard Blaine Peterson followed with 11, seven coming in the final quarter. Joe Lund also reached double figures with 10 points which all came in the first half. Although the Spartans took the 17 point victory, Monticello was threatening to come from behind throughout the game. After the inside scoring of DeFriez and the fastbreak buckets by Peterson and Lund, Emery took a 2 first quarter lead. However, Monticello came on strong in the second period and tied the score at 0 at the four minute mark. At that point, sophomore Terry Thomas hit an jumper followed by an unbelievable sue point streak by Lund as Emery jumped to an eight point lead. That lifted the 16-1- 20-2- 18-fo- ot halftime 5 Spartans to a lead. The third period was one of little production by either team as just 12 points were scored in the quarter, six by each team. Although Monticello had 12 turnovers in the third period, Emery failed to make much use of the possessions. Emery took total charge of the game in the fourth period led by k hoops by Peterson and a jumper by Boyd Lake early in the quarter. Davis & Progress Editor It was a clean sweep for San Junior High in Rafael basketball action against Canyon View last week in Ferron. The boys ninth and eighth grade teams as well as the girls team were winners against the Cougars. In the ninth grade game, San Rafael outscored Canyon View 3 in the second period to take a lead which the Cougars never threatened. The Bulldogs had little trouble in the second half holding the lead enroute to the 19-- jc 4. win. Although the game was close in the first period, which ended for San Rafael, a balanced scoring attack and solid defense by the Bulldogs in the second period proved the undoing of the visitors. Gary Robinson led the Bulldogs in gaining the big first half lead with eight points through the first two quarters on 51-3- 7-- ! Ui f 1 i. i 6 four field goals. Stewart Albrecht added seven, five coming in the first period. Canyon View could do little against the taller San Rafael team in the second half as Robinson continued to score inside while Darrell Huntsman J' v4f 5 '! 4 added two field goals which 7 lead gave San Rafael a going into the final period. Riding a comfortable lead going into the second half, Emery reserves Kelly Killpack, Lund, and Peacock put on an inside scoring show which left the visitors flat footed. The girls final league contest will be next Thursday, Feb. 3 at San Juan. |
