The worldwide food problem is so vast and complex that no real solution is possible during this century, according to Professor Dudley Kirk of Stanford University, national coordinator of the winterspring 1982 Courses by Newspaper series, Food and People. The weekly series of educational articles appears each Wednesday in the Market Bazaar section of the Sun Advocate. The College of Eastern Utah is also participating with the Sun Advocate and is providing an opportunity for readers to obtain three credit hours of college credit for readers interested in the program. Contact the Division of continuing Education for more information. Americans traditionally favor a quick fix answer to difficulties, says Kirk, and the international food crisis doesnt lend itself to fast remedies." Noting that the world has always been plagued by an uneven distribution of food, he says the dilemma currently is aggravated by increasing economic and political tensions. Kirk is professor of demography in Stanford Universitys Food Research Institute and the Department of Sociology, and is the dean and Virginia Morrison professor of population studies at Stanford. The plow is having a hard time keeping ahead of the stork, observes Kirk, referring to the mounting population in many underdeveloped countries. The result of too many people at the table is too much poverty, he adds, explaining that the main trouble is not a shortage of food, but rather a shortage of money to buy adequate nutritions The increasing urbanization of most countries also contributes to the problem, Kirk observes, pointing out that as more and more people move to the cities, the more pressure comes to bear on local agriculture to produce sufficient food at affordable prices. The people in control of some countries are much more worried about what happens in the cities than they are about attitudes in the rural areas, says Kirk, because cities ' are the centers of population and political power. Urban people are more vocal and therefore more dangerous. In retrospect, Kirk points out that a larger population although not a greater total of individuals is better fed today than at any other time in history. Unbalanced food distribution, he says, tends to be a personal problem as well as a mass crisis. Besides inequalities among countries, he says, there are inequalities within families as to who gets the most food, so that food distribution is a moral as well as an agricultural, economic, and political factor. However, we have lots of reasons to be optimistic about feeding ourselves and the world, Kirk continues, pointing to advances in agricultural productivity, new food technology, better distribution methods, and improvement of living standards in poor nations. It is not so much a question of our ability as of our will, he adds. For the first time in human history, its a matter of choice. What is rather disgraceful is that we are not making enough sacrifices to bring about adequate world nutrition. Kirk previously served with the State Department and was demographic director of the Population Council of New York City. A former president of the Population Association of America, he has written over 50 articles and three books, two of which were jointly authored, on population issues. 15-p- art 1981 NEWANDFULLY WARRANTED TXL INDY 340... $2999 TXC440 $2549 CUTLASS SS.... $2175 314-224- 6 E 1223fcb salina auction Producers Livestock Feeder Heifers Auction Salina, Utah Medium and Large 0 lbs Friday February 26, Frame 1 1982.
