However, in spite of the automobile, we are fast becoming a nation on our feet. Perhaps, this turnabout is due to the urging of the President's Council on Physical Fitness, or perhaps we are beginning to re- discover the joys of physical ac- tivity. Whatever the reason, it is apparent that running for train ing purposes, or for just plain fun is on the upswing. Running is an integral part of the training program for almost all sports since it helps to build stamina. But, along with the referred to as ever-prese- ; ' . , , benefits derived from running, there are also problems. Generally, they are due to either overuse, faulty foot and leg structure, or both. At a recent podiatric sports medicine seminar in New York, Drs. Steven Subotnick, Justin Wernick, Harold Schoenhaus and Sheldon Langcr, all Doctors of Podiatric Medicine, Fellows of the American College of Foot Orthopedists and members of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, discussed the problems arising from overuse that is, the strains, aches and pains which occur when the athletic partici pant does too much, too soon. This can occur in the casual participant as well as in the serious athlete. Dr. Subotnick, who is an as- sociate professor of Biomechanics and Surgery at the California College of Podiatric Medicine, stated that our foot and leg anatomy is generally for the surfaces not on which we run and train. As a consequence, the feet and legs cannot function as well as they should. When the severe stresses of athletic activity are heaped upon feet and these legs, injury occurs. These in well-suite- d juries can range from mild muscle strains to tendonitis, heel spurs and stress fractures of bone. To minimise the occurrence of overuse injuries, Dr. Subotnick advised the use of Sportho-ticbiodynamic sport orthotic which weigh 2 Vi devices, ounces each and are custom-mad- e from impressions of the athletes feet. These impressions are taken by a podiatrist or other medical specialist trained in podiatric sports medicine techniques. Sporthotics fit into most athletic shoes and are transferable from shoe to shoe. s, Dr. Schoenhaus, who is the chairman of the Department of Biomechanics at the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine, pointed out that, "Sporthotics could be tailored to meet the varying requirements of both the athlete and the sport activity and, in testing, were shown to be of significant value in improving speed and performance as well as in reducing the incidence of overuse injuries. Dr. Langer, director of The Langer Group in Deer Park. N.Y., stated that, by properly realigning the feet and legs with Sporthotics, much of the wear and tear which occurs in the feet, legs, knees, hips and spine during athletic activities, such as basketball, football, tennis and skiing, is eliminated. That is why we produce Sporthotics for so many prominent professional, college and world class athletes." Everyone is not a star athlete, not do you have to be. Good health and a good frame of mind depend largely on keeping active. What better way to keep active than by jogging a little every day? But, first visit a (Continued on Page 36) |
