Thus he is more likely to feel punished for the behavior of brushing his teeth than feeling rewarded We need to observe our children to determine what is rewarding to them. Most often we reward or reinforce with what is called social reinforcers. These are statements of praise, acceptance, approval, gratitude, of facial expressions such as smiling, or a pat on the back. A reinforcer is something that makes the child feel good. Many times parents give their children for it, and the possibility for that behavior to be repeated is diminished rather than enhanced. It is often important to reward a child when he comes close to the desired behavior in an effort to encourage a better try next time. By this method the child gains confidence and is then able to risk more than before. In summary, if we want to change behavior we need to determine what is reinforcing the undesirable behavior, then try to stop giving those reinforcements. Then when we see some change, or new behavior developing, we try to reward that behavior and help it develop into a good habit. These ideas of changing behavior apply to adults as well If you want your as children. friend or partner to change, rather than complaining or nagging, why not try to identify how that behavior is being reinforced and then try to change the rewards if possible. Parents do usually have better success with children because they have more control over the reinforcers than one adult has over another. Looking for ways to reinforce positive behaviors is more much satisfying than complaining about negative ones and is usually much more productive. T. For example, have you ever seen a parent hit a child for hitting another child? While the parent is trying to say, It is not okay for his behavior is you to hit, saying, It is okay to hit, see how I do it. The child is likely to become confused about which message to pay attention to and the undesirable behavior is likely to reoccur. Perhaps the parent could think of another way to convey the message that hitting is not acceptable. Secondly, we need to become more conscious of how we might unknowingly be reinforcing or rewarding undesirable behavior. To do this it is important to first of all realize that a reward or reinforcement for one child may not be rewarding to another. A look at how behavior is learned might be helpful in teaching us some methods of handling unacceptable action from our children. Most of our behaviors are learned through example, we learn how to do things primarily by seeing others do them. Behaviors that become habits are the ones that are rewarded or reinforced.
