(60 mins ) 0 IRONSIDE NEWS N (Patrick (Macfflee Patrick MacNee, who plays the dissipated writer Ian Wadleigh in Operation Prime Time presentation of Irwin Shaw's Evening in Byzantium, was born in London and grew up in such colorful British locales as Somerset, Banbury and Berkshire. He began acting at an early age in school and by the time he was eight, he had performed the title role in 'Henry V. o The MacNee family, which had been up until the 1930s now ran out of money and young Patrick had to rely on a scholarship to pursue his dramatic s Drama School in London. It training at wasn't very long after that until he landed his first professional acting job in the touring company of Little Woman,' where he met his first wife Barbara Douglas. He then understudied in the London production of The Doctor's Dilemma' (starring Vivien Leigh) just before joining the navy. When the war ended, MacNee went back into repertory theatre working constantly but never really making very much money. Occasionally he did parts in films such as 'Hamlet' and The Elusive Pimpernel' to pump some life into his bank account. He then emigrated to Canada in 1952 and worked constantly in Canadian television doing plays and series, including 'The Moonstone. After his divorce, he then returned to England. In 1961 MacNee became a part of television history when he introduced the character of John Steed in the British TV series 'The Avengers. Eight years and 150 episodes later. MacNee was an international star. To further attest to the series popularity is the fact that the sequel 'The New Avengers, also starring MacNee, will tentatively air soon on CBS. When the original 'Avengers' series went out of production, MacNee went back to the theatre and played the lead on Broadway in Sleuth. He then toured in several plays including 'Absurd Person Singular and d on several series including 'Columbo,' The Virginian and 'Alias Smith and Jones?
