Some years previous, however, there had been published by Mrs. Boan, now deceased, a little paper called “The Pappoose.” It: was, therefore, quite natural that the SinCe the opening of the Uintah Reservation seven years Pappoose should finally be transformed ihto the Chieftain. The five years that have elapsed since the first newspaper Was established have been years of struggle . ago more than $50,000 of” need9 less expense has been forced on the homesteaders by reason of the long and tedious journey necessary to reach the United ~States9Land Office at Vernal. To make this journey required from one to three days time each way. There were ' feed and hotel bills, expenses of witnesses and other incidentals to say nothing of the suffering and inconvenience made necessary by long and tedious trips The settlers of. the Reservation can ill—afford this expense. The money and time they have expended in making trips to the _Lan‘d Office would have made many improvements on their ranches. \Vhy was the Land Office not established in the vicinity of those Who have business with it? It was locat— and hopefulness. With a degree of courage and determination se‘dom witnessed 9 in a new country the settlers..ave forged steadily ahead overcoming obstacles and conquering difficulties, one by one. The future15 full of promise and hope. But there are many problems yet to bowil.ved The work of the future is to be greater than that of the past: To builda higher and better civilization; to establish and maintain Justice, Freedom and I”Quality; to seek the True, the Good and the Beautiful and to find the truest présperityin promoting the welfare of All. _ To these tasks THE RESERVATION llles will deVote itself.
