Show i A nice place to visit but... Canada geese nest at Desert Lake Refuge The spring season is a of period awakening. Flowers and grasses force their sprouts through the soil to reach out for the warmth of the sun. Birds of all sorts begin singing. The honking of flock after flock of Canada geese awakens many in the stillness of night. These migrants seem to almost lead the warm winds of spring to the north. Most flocks pass by without even down. Their looking traditional nesting areas lie far to the north. Others will set their sings and drop from the sky to feed in the fields below. Tradition shows that migrating Canada geese stop off in the same areas each year to feed. These migrants will return to the marshes where they grew up. After which, the flocks will break up into breeding pairs, select nest sites and set up housekeeping. Muskrat lodges are a preferred nesting site. It gives the pair a view of the area so they can keep watch for predators. The first Canada goose nest at Desert Lake Waterfowl Management Area was found March 31 this year. Usually the average clutch size is four to six large white eggs. One egg is laid each morning. After the last egg is laid incubation starts. After 28 days all the eggs hatch within hours of each other. The new downy goslings remain in the nest just long enough to dry out. Then they leave the nest forever and both parents brood and protect the young. and their Goslings parents prefer to use large open water areas where UMWA has The District Office has received a limited supply of for the applications disability pension provided for in the 1974 National Bituminous Coal Wage Agreement. And this year sixteen pair have selected nest sites. Hopefully, each year the number will increase. Artificial nest structures been have placed throughout the waterfowl management area. But, as of yet, no geese have utUized these structures. As summer advances the adult geese replace their young birds learn to fly. They begin by making short flights to nearby grain fields. Crops grown and left standing at Desert Lake Waterfowl Management area provide the majority of food for our geese. The geese feed on nearby farmlands, also. Occasionally they create a depredation problem and Wildlife experiencing waterfowl depredation problems should contact the Division for assistance. Killing these waterfowl is unlawful. weather Fall brings storm fronts and. winds from the north. Migrating geese prefer to ride south on these fronts. The most northern Canada goose populations begin their southward trek first. Any experienced goose hunter knows the value of a resident goose population when migrants begin passing through. Migrants tend to set their wings and settle onto areas with resident geese thus increasing the hunters quarry. Last fall about 70 southward migrating Canada geese were decoyed into the Desert Lake Waterfowl Management Area by our resident goose Eventually, these geese continued south to their winter feeding area. They remain on the wintering area until spring, when they can again get a free ride north on a south wind. Young geese feed exclusively on small insects for the first few weeks of their lives. Insects provide protein for growing geese. Those Canada geese that do not breed or produce young often times leave their home marsh and go farther north. There they will molt or replace their flight feathers. Usually by breeding and nonbreeding geese are unable to fly. During this period they seldom stray from the protection of open watch. During the flightless period waterfowl biologists use a variety of methods to capture young and adult geese. The captured geese are then aged and the sex determined. Aluminum leg bands are attached and the birds released. For the last four years about 100 goslings each year have been captured from other parts of Utah and released at the Desert Lake Waterfowl Management Area. Again, this summer in June, another 100 hoslings will be released. This will complete the introduction of Canada geese transplanted to our area.
