"Ride on," say more Utahns who have switched to the twowheeled vehicle for cheap, clean and healthful transportation. Although bicycling is a now solution to some of the states social problems, it is not without its own problems. The tremendous growth in the use of the bicycle has been accompianed by similar increase in biking accidents, says the insurance Information Institute. The injury and death toll from cycling accidents in Utah is high. Two persons lost their lives and 331 were injured as a result of 308 bicycle accidents in 1971. Five persons already have died in Utah bike accidents this year. Statistics show that in most bicycle accidents the cyclist violates a traffic law. This inattention or failure to yeild the right of way accounts for the largest number of mishaps, according to the Institute, In less than one-thi- rd of bike accidents, the motor vehicle driver violates a traffic rule or regulation. Rural bicycling accidents generally are more s evere. Though most accidents occur on city streets, more than 50 per cent of the fatalities and a large percentage of the serious injuries occur in rural areas. Bike riders should obey all the traffic laws and familiarize themselves with safety precautions of bicycling, the institute Emery news - EMERY COUNTY PROGRESS LEADER AUGUST 31, 1972) page 2 Bicycling Deaths more FOR... ..FAST 637-25- SERVICE 52 202 North , 2nd East Price, Utah Mr. and Mrs. Dermus Jensen spent 5 days in salt Lake for tests in preparation for an eye surgery for Dermus.
