A CRUSHING BURDEN completed Final inspection of the diversion structures at the head of the North, South and Mol-e- n ditches was completed recently. Personnel from the Soil Conservation Service and Ferron Canal and Reservoir officials participated in the event. The completed project includes three large Parshall measuring flumes at the head of three main canals, over 550 feet of 42 " concrete pipe and one' large concrete turnout on the North Ditch. A system of three large metal slide gates control the flow of awter through the Parshall flumes. Over 250 yards of concrete were used. The watermaster will now be able to see all three flumes from one location, making possible rapid, accurate distribution of water. These structures were built this past winter by the irrigation company. Funds were provided by the SCS through the Small Watershed Act, the Four Comers Regional Com- mission and the Ferron Canal and Reservoir Company. The Soil Conservation Service designed and inspected GIVE PEOPLE CHANCE TO SPEND In the last decade. Federal government expenditures have skyrocketed, as almost everyone knows. This fiscal year, Uncle Sam's budget was $125.2 billion higher than it was 10 years ago. Seventy-eigh- t percent of this increase, significantly, has been in spending. Worse fiscal 1972 deficit for the the estimated year is 38.8 yet, billion, with an additional 25.5 billion deficit estimated for 1973. non-defen- se the project. He cited Prof. Milton Friedmans statement that, Historically, public expenditures always increase sufficiently to any increase in public revenues and then some. Bedraggled American taxpayers are having another rec- ord thrust upon them. Each household will average $4,530 in state, local and federal taxes for fiscal 1972, according to the Tax Foundation. Thats up $200 from 1971 and is, once again, an e high. This years hike is due to boosts in social security taxes and state and local taxes, which will more than devour some relief we all will enjoy in our federal income tax load, the Tax Foundation said. In the past ten years estimated total taxes have increased 77.5 per cent per household. Total current tax payments at all levels, (Federal, state, and local) amount to $295 billion 6.5 per cent above fiscal 1971. The spending side of the picture is even more startling. The Foundation predicts total spending to rise by 12 per cent from $363 billion in 1971 to $405 billion in 1972. This means, of course, deficits at all levels of government and, probably, higher taxes in the future to help pay the interest on money governments must borrow to pay their all-tim- An effective way to halt this trend is to reduce Federal In a recent TAX LOAD REACHES NEW HIGH Maybe vaudeville is dead but there are some priceless comedy acts going begging here. bills. . pre-em- pt Therefore, Dr. Ture suggests limiting governments come by reducing tax rates.
