This air is composed of about 78 nitrogen, about 19 oxygen and less than 3 of carbon dioxide with very small amounts of other gases. All matter has weight and occupies space, rherefore, air has weight as one may see by weighing an empty balloon and then filling the ball oon with air and weighing it again. The balloon containing will weigh more than the empty oalloon. Air is relatively light when compared with solid materials, however, it has been found that a column of air one inch square at sea level and extending to the top of the atmosphere would weigh about 14.7 pounds. As one moves to higher altitudes the air pressure decreases. The air pressure at 18,000 feet is only about half that at sa level. We seldom notice air pressure unless a difference in pressure exists. When a difference in air pressure exists, the presence of pressure sems obvious. Wind is probably th most obvious result of a difference in air pressure. If the pressure difference is extremely great, a violent wind may develop. The following things are all related to air pressure. Your hearing is affected when you go up or down in elevation. Water boils at a much lower temperature at high altitudes than at low altitudes. The lid becomes stuck on a pan when heated and left to cool. A siphon tube transports a liquid from one elevation to another. Drinking a liquid from a straw, spraying hair-spra- y on your hair, and using a tire pump to pump up a tire all require air pressure. Flying an airplane depends upon air pressure. Using a vacuum cleaner and many other things you can think of require air pressure. All of the above things are related to air pressure. Reaction from the Departments of State and Defense was prompt and intense. They issued a position paper claiming the proposed restrictions would undercut NATO, could lead to withdrawal of troops from the UK, would leave us with few foreign customers, would worsen our balance of payments position, undermine free world security, and leave supply of weapons open to Russia. Alarmed at this dangerous situation, Senator J. W. Fulhright is rightfully demanding Congressional control over arms traffic. , Can you answer this question? if you had a 35 foot plastic straw could you dangle it out a window 35 feet up and drink lemonade from a glass on the sidewalk below? The answer is no. Air pressure is responsible for your ability to drink from a straw and at sea level air pressure is only sufficient to force water about 32 feet high. All the sucking in the world would not enable you to drink this lemonade. Likewise, it is impossible for a man to use a suction pump to and accessories. It is not surprising, therefore, that Senator Harry F. Byrd, Jr. promptly introduced an amendment to the Lxport-Impo- rt Bank Bill which authorizes a portion of foreign aid financing. The Byrd amendment would deny foreign aid to countries supplying North Vietnam; it would prohibit the President from authorizing $50 million of our taxpayers money to help build a Fiat automobile plant in Russia. In the House, Representative H. R. Gross offered an amendment containing even more restrictive provisions on U. S. aid to countries which trade with North Vietnam. The Gross amendment also provided nothing in this amendment or any other Act shall be construed to authorize the President to waive the provisions of this subsection. 30, 1967. Hubert C.
