I am somewhat puzzled about the lack of promotion in your county. We went out to Buck-hor-n wedge again a few weeks ago and also urov over the new interstate from the etui near the turn of the road just east of the Fremont Junction, to the end of the interstate. Took a few pictures. We have been across the San Rafael Swell and to Goblin Valley many times. Right now I am writing about the Buckhorn Wedge overlook area, overlooking the San Rafael gorge. In my opinion you have one of the most terrilic scenic potentials right there, and all along the San Rafael to Highway 24. We have taken some pictures of the area where the San Rafael leaves the ledges just west of Highway 24. I suppose these ledges are considered part of the water pocket fold. Whenever I have shown the slides of that area and the gorge from the Wedge, everyone has wanted to know how to get there. I feel that there is great potential for making those areas good tourist areas. This would nelp bring tourist business to Emery County. I realize I am not very important. Another lucky break for the young iiorse lovers is a chance to learn from experts. Helping to make all this possible is Merck Chemical Division of Merck & Co., Inc., Rahway, N. J. The firm will provide scholarships, educational trips and medals to 1966 horse priject winners. It will also be host to their state and national award winners attending the National Club Congress at Chicago next fall. In January of 1964, the United States Department of Apiculture w ithdrew registra t i o n which had permitted use of heptachlor on alfalfa. A few months later permission to use dieldrin was also withdrawn. Use of any chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticide except Mathoxychlor on the alfalfa crop is highly questionable at this time. We are not recommending chlorinated hydrocarbons on alfalfa for seed or forage for the following reasons: The U. S. Department of Agriculture has withdrawn registration of heptachlor for early spring adult alfalfa weevil control m the west, g above have residual eifects. All tend to accumulate in the fat andor butterfat of milk of animals that eat feeds that have been treated with these materials. The U. S. Food and Drug Administration is carrying out its of protecting responsibilities public health and has establishfor ed minimum tolerances these chemicals in or on food products. There is a 0 tolerance tor pesticides in milk. In order to protect our agricultural industries and be as sured of complying with the intent of the FDA and USDA, we deem it necessary to exclude i h e chlorinated hydrocarbon chemicals listed above from forage crop use and to caution farmers to follow chemical application instructions carefully We have available in the Extension office a pamphlet entitAlfalfa Weevil Control, led Number 54, which discusses Parathion, Malathion, Diazinon, Guthion and the recommended roles for weevil control. injections 1 to 2 weeks apart, given in the spring will last one season. A vaccination is also available for Strangles. This should be given intramuscularly three doses given one week will produce immunity for six months. To protect against Tetanus or Lockjaw in horses, tetanus toxoid, two doses given four to six weeks apart, produces immunity for one year. For internal parasite or worm control, the following should give satisfactory results: Novemiber-Docem-be- r, Anthon; December-JanuarPiperazine; May Equizole. FISH BAIT OR NO BUMPS Fish bait or smooth lawns, that is the choice facing many home owners this spring as earthworms leave rough mounds on their lawns. These true worms usually are most numerous in soils high in organic mat-cria- l. They move to the soil I surface during periods of high soil moisture, leaving their objectionable mounds. However, they are credited with improv-m- g the physical conditions of the soil, and they do make good fish bait. So it is a choice between their good and their bad characteristics. Those who want to be rid ol the mound makers can most successfully control earthworms with chemicals in the spring and all. Poor control is most frequently obtained where the soil is dry at the time of treatment. For earthworm control, apply 1 pound of 4 percent wet-tabchlordane as a dust or spray to each 1,000 sq. feet of lawn area. Then, thoroughly water the pesticide into the soil as soon as possible after it is applied. CAUTION: Keep the small children off the lawn following the application until the lawn has had a good irrigation and (hen dried. le long-lastin- When you cant see them, you can almost feel theyre in the room with a Long Distance call.
