What does your flag look like? asked the American. It has three stripes, replied the Dutchman, red, white and blue. We say they have a connection with our taxes: we get red when we talk about them, white when we get our tax bills, and pay till were blue in the face. Thats just how it is here, commented the American, only we see stars too. We got a phone call the othei day that surprise di us, yet it provided a certain amount of pleasure. It was from one of the good people of Ferrpn, who was apparently on the committee for the 24th of July celebration. Up to this point it was no different than any other of dozens of phone calls we receive each day, some to compliment us, some to complain, and1 some, to our enjoyment, just to pass the time of day. (Now at this point the call became other than the run of the mill stuff. We were asked in a nice way If we would like to help judge a contest. Now mind you, there are many different kinds of contests this time cf year horse contests, cow contests, andl even grand champion hog contests what with all the rodeos, livestock shows and riding club events coming up. With all these contests available, we ended up with a beauty contest. Thats all we know, a beauty contest. Now seems to me this could cover any one of tiie aforementioned types. Theres no prettier beauty than a bier broad fat steer. However, there was one thing in our conversation that rather led us to believe that it might be a dairy cow contest. According to instructions, we are to judge not only on beauty, but also on personality, now I ak you, is there anything any more personal than those big dark motherly eyes of a cow at milking time? One thing stumped us though, and that was the fact that we are also to judge on talent. This leaves us at a loss. Oh well, come the 24th we will know. We just cant wait to see those beauties. Speaking of bargains and I we were run across one the other day that you might be interested in, while we were rummaging through an attic room at the shop We stumbled over, among other things (youd be surprised some of the things that can collect in an attic at a printn short Why there was box after box of old! engravings thats pictures an old adding machine patented in ID901, an eyelet machine, a check writing machine, part of presses and linotypes and other various machinery, not to pientiQn several hundred! pounds of foundry type all pid and boxes of bent mats) , a book written in 1901. It contained a list of all the newspapers in the United States. You guessed) it, the Progress was listed in it. The amazing thing, however, was theof fact that since 1901, a periodtwo appwars roximately 55 years, and one police action later, the subscription price is up only $150 over what it was then. Can someone give us some prices of other things during that era, so that we can make a compar-itiv- e study of the rising cost of the Emery County Progress? A.
