The company will build: An entire new town for 5,000 people, with stores, a hospital, theater and everything else a community of that size needs. steam powA er plant in Ontonagon that will employ about 100 men when finished A smelter, a copper mill and mining installations. A 20 mile railroad extension to the mine site. Improved harbor facilities to handle coal for the power plant. Three Years to Build During the three years aD this is going on the village of Ontonagon expects a boom that wiD probably mean new homes, restaurants and stores for the community. Many of the communitys merchants believe the effects wiU be felt much longer than the three years of the construction program because of the nearness of Ontonagon to the mine. Businessmen also agree that the town will face numerous problems during the coming years from the influx of workers. At the present time there is hardly any vacant houses and unemployment is almost nonexistant The village has a large paper and pulp mill employing more than 300 persons. There are two smaller mills and another smaU one is being built. Three years ago the community suffered an economical reverse when the biggest lumber company, employing up to GOO persons, closed down. Some of the workers moved away, but most stayed and were eventuaUy absorbed by other firms after being without jobs for some time. Faith in the Town Ontonagons seven restaurants, one theater, two hotels and eight taverns will feel the pressure of expansion. "Its going to turn the town upside down, said John J. Clark who runs the theater. He added that he would show movies aU day and aU night if there were erough customers. For over a year people of the community knew the mining company was seeking an RFC loan and most of them held on to their property. They are stiU holding on until they see what the real estate, market is going to do. Old timers of the community report they have seen mines and lumber mills come and go during the years and it hasnt made much difference. "Something always takes their place, said C. J. Crooker. If something unforeseen should happen to keep the boom from developing, people of the village would probably shrug it off. It has happened before and the town has kept on an even keeL even in the depression. As one man said: "I got a lot of faith in this town. When the lumber miD puUed out I thought Ontonagon would faU on its Visser, but it did : Where They Come From NEW YORK "If you want to size up a football team,. writes L.P.S., take a look at where most of the players come from. Theres the answer. Teams that have many players from out of their own state were benefited by the heaviest proselyting, recruiting and subsidizing, as a rule. Did you notice that in a recent well-select- ed team, nine of the eleven men came from the north? I just made a check and found the majority of the Southern stars came from weU above the old Mason and Dixon or Smith and Wesson line. Pennsylvania is the main recruiting ground, "On the other band, be continues, Texas teams are nearly aU packed with Texans. Missouri has nearly aU Missouri boys In her line-u- p. Id say Pennsylvania could field a team that would outmatch any in the country. In- eluding Ohio and Texas. But one state cant take care of fifteen or twenty colleges. Or maybe many more. If any heavy cut Is made in footbaDs present system the loudest squawk will come from Texas. Texas has from 800 to 900 prep schools that go in seriously for foot-baThese myriad schools supply Texas, SMU, TCU, Rice, Baylor, Texas A. and M. and one or two others. The Texas athletic scholarship list is also heavy and if there is any big reduction here Texas may secede again if not from the United States, at least from the N.C.A.A. Texas could lure in Arkansas and Oklahoma, and have aU the fun and action wanted. FootbaU in Texas is a civil war and the teams reaUy go aU out. The high schools in Texas battle it to the hilt fromi September to December. I dont know whether Texas has the phony courses for football players that so many other colleges have or not. I doubt it, since most of the complaints that have come this way havent blown in from Texas. . . U.
