Hoos Trees Now Anticipate A Much Longer Life City trees may soon be enjoying longer and healthier lives. The answer to growing trees successfully in areas covered with pavement is not a new wonder drug but a new type of porous asphalt being tried out in Providence, R. 1. It is hoped this type of asphalt will prove to be a covering that will withstand foot traffic and still allow ample water to get through to the roots of the trees. The experiments deal with trees planted in the paved pedestrian islands of a parking area in Providence. The new porous asphalt being used as paving allows 80 per cent of the rainfall to percolate into the ground over the whole surface of the Island walks. This -course mixture of stone and sand combined with asphalt, obtained after considerable testing, allows 500 c.c. of water to go h through a ring of the mixture in 8.5 seconds. The percolation is equivalent to a rainfall of nearly 15 inches. The pedestrian islands which house the trees are dished to retain water. Recently, when hoses were turned on them, not a drop of water ran over the curbs because it was absorbed as fast as it streamed onto the surface of the binder- five-inc- RIMIN' TIME By POSEN asphalt. Few cities have had success In planting and growing trees in paved areas, because they cannot provide adequate open ground around the bases of the trees. Watering just around the trunk is not enough to provide the necessary moisture for the trees finger-lin- g ends. It is hoped this new paving plan will get to the root of the problem by providing for pedestrian traffic as well as insuring adequate moisture for the trees. 1 iron them onto gifts for CHEAPER by kh DOZEN RCHID bouquets measure 8 children-plasuits, bibs, quilts. inches, are in dye-fapurples, lavender and yellow. MUTT AND JEFF By Buil Fisher WYLDE AND WOOLY By Arthur Pointer By Bert Thomas Dr. Frank pioneer literacy expert, told a dinner meeting of nearly 200 church and business leaders here that there will be a dozen more Koreas all over Asia unless the United States can win the loyalty of the masses of Asian people. The dinner, given in Dr. Lau-bac- h, honor, was sponsored by the committee on world literacy and Christian literature of the National Council of Churches. Dr. Laubach, who recently returned from a seven-month- s working tour of Asia, warned that our everlasting advertisement of our terrible weapons is losing the cold war. We are losing the masses of beAsia and Africa, he said, cause they read and hear only how we are using our money to make hydrogen bombs and jet fighters. This will not awe them into submission. It makes them hate us. It drives them toward the Communists. Not military strength, but technical skills and resources used in can compassionate service, save Asia from becoming an island of freedom surrounded by a Dr. hostile sea of Communism, Laubach said. The masses will welcome any nation that unselfishly offers to help them and has the good sense not to drive shrewd bargains. Dr. Laubach recalled that he was in India during the Congressional debate over giving or selling two million tons of grains to India. We saw the fury of the people as they read what some of our foolish congressmen said against India and Nehru, he commented. What saved the situation was the fact that while congress tarried and waited and wrangled, the people of the United States sent almost as much foodstuff to India in shipload after shipload as congress finally decided to sell. New York The Council of the American Meteorological Society, representing the meteorological profession, in cognizance of the current public interest in weather modification and control has adopted the following statements as best representing the present state of knowledge in this field. 1. The seeding of supercooled clouds with dry ice, silver iodide and similar materials will usually convert at least a portion of the cloud to ice crystals. 2. The seeding of relatively thin, supercooled layer clouds may open holes or valleys in the cloud deck but little rain or snow will result. 3. The seeding of small, inactive cumulus clouds will usually result in the partial or complete dissipation of the clouds without the release of any significant amounts of rain or snow. 4. At best, seeding can be expected only to trigger the release of precipitation from e x i s ting supercooled clouds. The release of substantial amounts of precipitation by either natural or artificial means requires the of moist air currents. 5. The weather conditions which appear to be most favorable for the artificial release of rain or snow are thus very much the same as those requisite for natural rainfall. For this reason it is extremely difficult to determine whether or not the results of a single seeding experiment are favorable. Scientific knowledge of the physical processes by which rain and snow are formed has not advanced to the point where it is possible to predict the results of seeding rain clouds. 6. There is very little evidence and no present scientific basis for the belief that we now possess the ability to modify or control the weather and climate of a major portion of the country.
