Show r EMERY COUNTY PROGRESS, CASTLE DALE, UTAH WOMAN'S WORLD Parent's Old Suits, Dresses Can Yield Good Materials By Ertta Haley found that MOST MOTHERS have expensive to outfit children completely from ready-mad- e clothing, but the cost can be cut If only some of the wardrobe has to be purchased. Even though you may not have other youngsters who pass their clothing on to younger members of the family, the child's own clothes often have remake possibilities. Clothing from mother and daddy can frequently yield good material for a childs wardrobe. No child, no matter how small, will be enthusiastic about clothing which is unattractive, and who can blame him or her? Children have an innate sense of styling and color which may come from their being admired in something nice. At any rate, whatever you remake, do it carefully, with a flair for style, so your efforts are put to good purpose. Fabrics which you draw from old clothing should be clean. If the garment can be laundered, well and good; otherwise, have it cleaned professionally. Laundered old clothing should be pressed before you start remaking it or you cannot get the material straight enough to use for cutting. Garments should be taken apart at the seams for restyling. Overalls and slacks which are worn at the knees can be used again, if they are still large enough, if you place decorative patches on the knees. These can be very clever, indeed, if they're cut in the shape of animals and in a contrasting shade and then sewed to the knees. Sweaters which have become too clothing used is more than ample, save time and simply cut apart short in the sleeves can have these cut off and the armholes bound to at the seams. Youll find that most of them will still fit through chest and shoulders, but theyre useless with their Re-U- se toddler-going-on-tw- pants. Cut the shirt off the pants at the waist and hem the bottom of it. It may be worn with slacks or overalls for several months in this state. Overalls can be made inexpensively from some of Dads work shirts, an old seersucker housedress of yours, or even a corduroy skirt These little knit shirts which youve converted to T shirts for overalls are usually pastel shades which are not as practical for the toddler who gets more soiled. Deep tones such as navy, wine or brown, which keeps tots covered. These are nice to wear over a shirt Old corduroy overalls or other pieces of similar material of your own can be made into butcher boy or boxy jackets which are excellent to wear with slacks or overalls, for both boys and girls. Little Girls Clothes Require Charming Trim Your little daughters can look charming in clothes that require little material, and a little bit more of trimmings. Its amazing what can be done with mothers old maternity dresses, robes, lingerie, or even with clothes the girl herself has outgrown. Take, for example, the outgrown dress in a pretty pastel shade. This can be converted into a sundress, or pinafore, if you simply cut off the bodice and restyle it with an apron effect with a bib front. Use straps over the shoulders that continue to a waistband that ties in the back. Cuttings can be used to fashion wide ruffles to edge the shoulder straps. Old organdie formats or discarded sheer curtain material dyed a luscious pink, blue, aqua or yellow are excellent sources for material if you plan to make a starchy pinafore the little girl can wear for dress occasions, either over a dress or over slip and blouse. Simply use a pinafore pattern that you like and cut from the material as you would from yard goods. What about those old pinafores which the girl has outgrown? Add an extra inch or two which she needs at the bodice by inserting a band of eyelet trimming. Then add length to the garment with an eyelet ruffle at the skirt and she can have another years wear from it Old maternity dresses which you never want to see again have plenty of material in them for gay dresses, especially if theyre charming prints. The skirt of one dress has enough material for a two or three year olds dress or two sun suits for a small boy. Fashion Light Coats From Old Clothes coats for the children WIFE does a lot to make us all happy, but shes so darned unhappy herself," writes a husband from a Colorado farm. "Daisy is 37, his letter goes on, "and she is devoted to me and our five kids. But I honestly dont think she has another friend in the world. "She suspects everyone, distrusts everyone, and criticizes everyone. She has bad quarrels with practically every woman in our town. This one said something mean about her when they were in high school; that one didnt come to see her when she had her first baby, and the third rented the house she and I looked at when we wanted to live in town one winter. Someone else borrowed a book and never returned it, and still another criticized Daisy for giving our girls permanents while they were in grade school. One of her oldest friends hasnt spoken to Daisy for years because she sent Daisy a Christmas present, and Daisy found a card sent to this friend from another woman, Inside. Daisy never forgave her. Has Never Forgiven "Her family and mine would be glad to make much of our children, especially the girls, who are now 16 and 14. But my wife has never forgiven my mother for something Ma said to a friend when I was first married, to the effect that she didnt believe Daisy wanted chil- - Excavation Loafers Can't 'Dig' Ban By H. Can it be expected that they will continue to have the morale demanded in a world crisis, once the steam shovels fold up? Elmer Twitchell, a charter member of the Building Kibitzers Association of North America and a past president of Local 2354 of the Knothole Confederation, was among those wilting under the Washington edict suspending new construction. We found him depressed and angry. Also pretty exhausted, due to his belief that he had better hurry and kibitz all present construc Twitchell started to leave. "I used to watch only two or three excavations a day, he said, "but Im loading up on em now before they are all gone. W7e halted him and asked if he intended to protest to Washington. And gradually it has been dawning on them that it is not in one case or two, but that her dislikes embrace practically our entire social group. What can I do? Wrong Moral Training Your wife, George, didnt have the right moral training when she was young. She may have had schooling, dancing, riding, tennis, languages. But she hasnt been taught to forgive. She hasnt been told to be humble, to put herself and her little petty pride and vanity and sensitiveness aside; to wipe the slate gloriously clean of old hurts and grudges every little while and start fresh. No, she has nursed her precious little grudges, injuries, her slights and snubs, the forgetfulness of her friends, their innocent mistakes or hasty comments. If your mother said Daisy didnt want children, 16 years ago, the mere fact of having five lovely children doesnt heal the hurt in Daisy's pitiful little narrow heart. She has reveled in her ineffectual little revenges, which have hurt only herself, and you and her children, and never have reached their real target at all Of the good times she has missed, the happy summer camping and the holiday parties, the pride she might have felt in showing her children to old neighbors and friends, Daisy will never know. She is too deeply wrapped in her own righteous indignation. Hers is a very extreme case ol a common trouble. Lots of women nurse one or two grievances all their lives; rarely does anyone make quite so thorough a job of it as Daisy does. What they all needed was a good mother or father. 140 One of the most delicate fabrics of all, when it comes to washing, is wool. Extremely hot water will actually destroy wool fibers, so never put woolens in anything hotter than lukewarm water. Dont let them soak for any length of time; dont wring them or twist them; dont hang them up to dry. Wash them quickly, squeeze the water out gently, and spread them flat for drying. One of the best ways to keep a clothesline clean is to take it indoors when its not being used, and thats a simple job if you screw eyes into the posts and fasten hooks on the ends of the line. Mighty handy when a sudden summer shower pops up and you want to get the line indoors in a hurry. Pretty Trip for Spring Wear Funny Man! It was once remarked to Lord Chesterfield that man is the only creature endowed with the power of laughter. True, said the peer, and you may add, perhaps, that he is the only creature that deserves to be laughed at. 10 100 1923 1943 When your clothesline needs washing, coil it around a washboard or a piece of wood about that size; stand it in a tub of hot soapy water, and scrub it thoroughly with a brush. To avoid twisting and tangling, let it dry right on the board, and put it up again when its completely dry. SEWING CIRCLE PATTERNS 120 PER CENT If you want to shrink a woolen garment deliberately before the first time its washed, soak it in cold water for about two hours; then spread it out to dry without stretching it in any way. If you must hang a woolen garment up to dry, first pin it or baste it to a turkish towel, and ing the towel on a clean window and resting the screen behang the towel and all over the screen line. Or, dry it indoors by spread- - tween two chairs so that tile air can get at both top and bottom. 130 1 To avoid having woolen garments turn stiff and hard after washing, add a few drops of glycerme or a pinch of borax to the wash water. 1949 1950 AVERAGE The above chart illustrates crop production for 1950 on U.S. farms. The agriculture department reported the output was the third highest on record. gSg outturns to this relatively large 1950 total only soybeans, sorghum grain, sugar beets and red clover seed. The com crop of 3,131 million bushels slightly exceeded forecasts. Others in this class of very large crops are oats, all hay, rice, potatoes. popcorn, tobacco, cranberries and alfalfa and sweet clover seeds. Cotton and cotton seed, peaches, and apricots were relatively small crops, while rye, buckwheat, sorghum forage, dry peas, velvetbeans, broomcorn, sergo and sugar cane sirup were among those with small outturns. Dairymen Up Production By Feeding Good Legume A number of dairymen are advising keeping your cows literally stuffed with good legume hay to step up milk production and cut feed costs. C. S. Rhode, of the University of Illinois, says 25 pounds of alfalfa hay will furnish all the protein a cow needs to produce 30 pounds of 4 per cent milk. It will also furnish all the needed calcium and is the best source of carotene and vitamin D during the high-quali- ty winter months. Alfalfa hay will provide both one pound of protein and 100 pounds of total digestible nutrients at lower cost than soybean oil meal, oats, or corn and cob meaL One pound of protein in alfalfa hay costs only eight cents, but it costs 11 cents in soybean oil meal, 22 cents in oats and 25 cents in com and cob meaL Alfalfa will furnish 100 pounds of TDN for $2.50, but it costs $5.56 in soybean oil meaL $3.76 in oats and $3.13 in com and cob meaL Lovely Ensemble THERES A definite spring-lik- e air to this smart three-piec- e ensemble in junior sizes. And with her own only relative, a married brother, she has not been on speaking terms since his wife gave a party on the night we were giving a party. "Now, the tragedy is, George "that Ingalls letter continues, Daisy really hasnt any idea things are this way. She is so devoted a wife and mother she can't see that she is cutting our girls off from all the pleasures natural to their ages, by ruling that they never can enter certain houses and that she doesnt want them to be friendly with this family and that. "This means constant arguments and disappointments for the girls. Their mother tells them that they will have plenty of friends and good times as the years go on, but that she simply will not forgive old slights and prejudices. One of my sisters has boys a few years older than my girls; she is generous, resents nothing and forgives everything. and she wants our Sheila and Donna to join their cousins for all sorts of good times. My wife forbids it. We could have fine parties of our own out here on the farm, for ours is a grand old house and there is a good deal to amuse kids, but the same reasons hold here, too. "Can you suggest some argument or course that will solve this problem and give my girls a chance to live somewhat freer lives? They are both loving, natural girls who Cosmic Ray Race East and West Study Particles from Space SCIENTISTS are racing to develop rays. Two British scientists engaged in cosmic ray research at Harwell have disappeared in the direction of Russia. Cosmic rays may be defined by calling them high energy, fast moving particles which are smaller than the atom and which fly through space. When they reach the earths outer atmosphere, they knock its atoms apart into showers of additional particles that reach the ground. Cosmic rays have been trapped in a 360 ton vault at a depth of 40 feet underground and made to "speak over a network of 70 radio stations. More than 100 cosmic particles pass through every human head a minute. These rays, despite their unusual powers, are not felt. They might someday be used to make a super atom bomb smasher, or they might take the place of the atom bomb trigger needed to explode the hydrogen bomb. They might make it possible to use atom bombs on submarines or on the battlefield. Some experts say the cosmic shower is the result of a vast explosio- - ir. the universe many thousands' of years ago. Or they may be derived from sun spots or solar electro- magnetic storms.
