If they are allowed to develop and consume County Extension Agent the hay they become stronger the Alfalfa weevil has taken and are able to withstand severe MERRILL E. COOK highest toll of hay this year than In any recent season. They have been found generally throughout the county and have been reported severe In most parts of the state. It Is estimated that weevil have damaged nearly tons of hay In Emery counhave shortened ty this year and the crop 2,000 or 3,000 ton. The opinion of men differ on 8,-0- 00 how alfalfa weevil should be controlled, and about the only definite thing that can be said is that there is no sure control known. A number of things have helped. It has been generally observed this year that people who have been dusting in past years have not been as severely hit by the weevil. Others have experienced light Infestations where they have made a habit of early cut- ting. Government investigators on this problem recommend that early cutting is the surest and best means of weevil control. If a stand of alfalfa can be when the thrifty enough that can be cut weevil first start, it before it is damaged and as soon as the hay Is removed, the field be dragged or in some other way dusted, the young weevil are notwithstand such treat- treatment. Another Item in favor of early cutting Is the fact that many of the first weevil to hatch, become aced upon by parasites and do not develop into adult beetles, while the later weevil are not so When an alfalfa field Is allowed to stand until the weevil leave, they destroy much hay and sill develop Into mature beetles for the next years crop. If they are killed at an early stage, however, they have less chance of holding the second crop back and the next years family of weevils is materially diminished. Dusting with calcium arsenate has given some relief and over a period of a few years, seems to be quite effective. It Is sugegsted, therefore, that farmers seek first to make their hay thrifty and the damage by weevil will not be as noticeable and in case of infestations, early cutting will be possible, still giving a good crop of hay. Technically. this method of early cutting should increase the third crop by making it earlier and thus giving a longer growing period. Dusters are successful if properly used and followed up year after year, Funeral services were held Thursday for Mrs. Hilda Locke.
