Blinding After next year, San Juan County may become es well known an ATV destination as any in the state. Blanding City Councilman David Palmer reported last w eek that the first annual San Juan ATV Safari ATV' trail event will be held Sept. 2003. The three-da- y event is being promoted by Southeast Utah Land Users along with other local ATV groups, and ill involve Blanding and Nlonticello. Palmer said it could include as many as ten ATV trails throughout the county, with guides to direct visitors along the way. Palmer reported that organizers of Richfields annual Piute Trail ATV ride have offered to help coordinate next Septembers inaugural ATV event in San Juan County. The Whitmore mansion is more than the inn, a Nephi breakfast, it is also the Whitmore Academy, a place for troubled youth to find strong foundations, much like the home that was built in 1898. Mark Sudweeks and his wife are the owners of the Whitmore and still use the second floor for a bed-anbreakfast. The home has also become a place of learning. Currently there are 12 students living at the home and under the care of the Sudweeks. The couple have been providing opportunities for youth who have trouble at home and in school for the past 25 years and have four such locations known as Who Am 1 Discovery" residential treatment centers. They are seeking an appropriate business license from Nephi City. er The race started at the Moab Golf Course and fin- ished at the Grand Co. High School track. Moabs Ian won the mens division in a time of 34:28, while Kathaleen Recker from Grand Junction took the womens title in 37:30. Tooele Police have confirmed that a Tboele School District employee is being investigated for stealing money from district coffers embezzled an estimated $32,220 over the past 15 months. The employee, who police say had been with the district at least 10 years, worked in the districts payroll office. The crime was reported on Oct. 18 by school officials. Tboele Police detectives said the departments investigation yielded evidence consistent with one count of 2nd degree felony theft with one count of 2nd degree felony forgery. Transcript Bulletin Monticello While a series of autumn rain and snow storms have put a smile on the faces of dry land farmers and have increased the amount of water in the soil, those dependent upon stored water arrested in the midst of one of the worst droughts in recent memory. The soil has grabbed hold of all the moisture and as a result, there has been little, if any, run-of- f from the fall storms. Correspondly, the amount of water stored in area reservoirs is, in many cases, at an all time low. Manti The Ephraim City Council voted unanimously to require Mayor Morris Casperson to return $121,730 he received from a land sale by Dec. 4, and to suspend negotiations with another property owner in the same area. A full room of citizens appeared at the beginning of the meeting, most to criticize the sale. The decision to reconsider about 35 acres from Casperson and about 60 acres from the other owner, Craig Oberg, for future sewage treatment operations came at the end of the meeting after most citizens had left. The council had earlier voted to void the sale to Casperson. The motion said that if the money was not paid on time the city will seek whatever means are necessary" to collect it. The New diabetes center Messenger-Enterpris- e ... Cortez, Colo. With a prayer and a blessing the Sleeping Ute Diabetes Project opened their new building in Tbwaoc last Tuesday. The new trailer includes exercise equipment and offices for a dietitian, registered nurse, director and an assistant. The Project also has two employees at White Mesa, Utah for tribal members there. Native Americans are more than twice as likely to get diabetes as the general population, with 15.1 percent of the Native American population having diabetes while only 6.2 percent of the general population has the ailment. Cortez Journal $50 million expansion . . . Roosevelt Work is expected to start early next year on phase one of a $50 million project that will double the size of Sandwash Reservoir. The federally approved 2003 project" will expand the 12,000 foot reservoir to 24,000 feet and develop new irrigation, culinary and industrial water supplies. The Central Utah Water Conservancy District Board accepted a $5.6 million bid submitted by George W. Johansen for construction of a diversion structure and pipeline that will funnel water from the Lake Fork River into Sandwash Reservoir. A total of nine companies submitted bids. Springville Springville needs to seek a new water source was the theme of Councilman Jim Reeds report at the regular meeting of the city council last week. Reed said he did not want to go through another summer like the past one wondering where the water for the city was going to come from and fearing that the city storage tanks would dry up. He suggested that the city needed to bond or borrow the money needed and should seek a new source of water. He said that the city was drilling south of town, but anything could happen there. The tournament, organized by Keith Stegall and Tiro Graham, with the help of City of Moab Recreation director Marcy Till, has become an annual event. Moab invites teams from across the region to participate in the tournament. There are no trophies or prizes, but a great deal of heart involved in the playing. The Moab United team is a collection of talented players who have been scrimmaging together in Moab since the mid-90The team swept the tournament after two days of hard playing. Three games on Saturday sent the team home to soak weary muscles before vying for the championship on Sunday.
