I saw a lot of cowboy TV howl and cowboy movie, but 1 think th first black cowboy I ever mw wa Cleavon Littla a Bart in Mai Brook' 1974 Slating Saddltt. But tha fact ia that 2304 of all cowboy in tha old Wait war African American, and I bahava it i important to recognise thair contribution, which i why many of u hava boon reluctant to lupport renaming Negro Bill Canyon limply William Oransteff Canyon. Howavar, because many other do find tha term ofTeniiva (it original nama wai avan mora offan live), I now baliava it ihould ba changed. If it war renamed William Oramtaff Canyon, lignaga at tha antranca to tha canyon and it trail, ai well a pamphlet and brochure describing it, put out by BLM and CN11A, among others, could fill In for ui more of tha history both of this canyon in particular and of African American participation in tha history of tha West John Me Quean Moab Name of canyon should not be changed Latter to tha Editor: read In tha pajier about renaming Negro Bill Canyon and wa lurprised to loam that Negro wai a dtetaatefid nama. Could my mother ba wrong? In tha 40s a colored family moved into Moab. A kids wa used tha racial slur to refrr to them. She took ms aside and explained to me tliat you don't make frin of people and their race and if I didn't stop she would get out tha hoa handle. She told me they were Negroes and to uaa that to refer to them if necessary. Th dictionary itatei under Negro; that they war people whose ancestors cam from Africa principally aouth of tha Sahara, and characterised generally by a dark akin. For the life of me I cannot sea anything distasteful about the name Negro. No matter what name ti used be it Black, or Negro, people will see them aa their prejudice dictate. Changing th name will not help, The I n name only become a problem when the person easing tha nama react with sillier pride or hat. For example, our family had some Negro friend come to visit and we took them up the river. They taw the lgn for Negro Bill Canyon and asked about It. We told them th story basically a Sam printed in hi column and they were very pleased to know that Negroes had been in the West a early a that. They like knowing that the name wa used to serve a bit of history in the area. I think for th sake of the historical aspect it should stay Negro Bill Canyon. It would be nice if this could be laid to rest instead of coming up every few year a new people move into our area, see th sign and react with their prejudice -- Dale M. Irish President of Grand County Historical Preservation Commission Get the ball rolling to change name of canyon Dear Editor; support a change in the Negro Bill Canyon trail name. I do not believe that our vocabularies are so limited that a term which preserves William GranitafT face cannot be Incorporated into a more appropriate trail head name. I hike with my toddler on th Negro Bill Canyon trail and have resorted to calling it Die Bill Canyon Trail, We frequently visit relatives in Maryland. I Through a tnddlerb innocence hi choice of language can at times be inappropriate. I do not risk introducing my twidler to the Inappropriate term, Negro" aa in Negro Bill Canyon. Many racially diverse Marylander may not tak this term lightly, even from a toddler. I jet's get this ball rolling for the name change. Sincerely, Holly Hartenstine Moab Democracy is two wolves and a sheep planning lunch Tb the Editor: find it Interesting that lot a McF.llianey, in her letter (T I. Mar. 21) complains alamt Uie very thing she is doing! People are people, and politic is always a messy business. What make her "politically correct view more valid than someone else' view? In a free community there ia disreupect and Intolerance aa well as resjiect and tolerance, and we all have a right to our own opinion. You put it in the wkt, and you take your chances, Sometime a reaction to Ignorance may be seen a Intolerance, but where is it written that we must suffer ftsds? Write on, but if you rant take Die heat, get out of the kitchen! What is tersona! courage needed for, if there is no opssition? Look, some people are afraid nowadays, liecause our very way of life is under attack. W no longer have aome of the God given freedom we started out with; bureaucracies are choking the very spirit from our bodies. Maybe aome of us don't do so well at writing without hurting others feeling. Sorry. Pm not going out like a sheep in a world going nuts, so don't take it personally unless it applies to you. I I must also question the statement: The United Slates has been called "the greatest democracy on Earth. Who said that? Certainly no one who ever thoroughly studied the history of the (bunding of this republic. The term "democracy waa never mentioned by th founders in any significant way, except to dismiss it. Some democratic principles are used to elect our representatives, and at the lower forma of government w may use a democratic vote, but we have no "legacy of democracy, and hopefrilly (my opinion) wa never will. Democracy ia basically mob rule, where th majority can force th minority to comply with their wishes. In a "democracy those Intolerant individuals could force you to obey their laws. Democracy la two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have (hr lunch. 1ft our constitutionally limited republic, the government protecta you from them, and the Constitution for the United States protects you from the government. Respectfully, Peter Remington, Castle Valley Summo plan would remove tailings from Atlas site Dear Editor: This letter in response to your article last week by Franklin Seal on the Kndgam fir Tail-fag- s RtmovaT and the debate over capping the Atlaa Mill tailings in place v. removing the tailings to a new repository site. I remind you and your readers that Summo Minerals Corporation ha tabled a prtqwsal which would allow th DOE to remove the tailing from their current location and transport them to our proposed Lisbon Valley copper heap leach processing site for disposal within our proposed lined heap leach pad for th same cost as DOE ha estimated to rap the 1 tailings in place. Summo maintains this alternative ia an economically and environmentally viable alternative to either capping the tailings in place or transporting them to a new repository north of town at nearly three times the cost. I don't know if this alternative was discussed at the stakeholders meeting to which your article referred, but DOE ia frilly aware of it and is consid ertng It a viable alternative for dealing with the Atlas milling tailings. Sincerely, Greg Hahn President A CEO, Summo Minerals Corporation Applauds local high school students Dear Editor: holers I had the opportunity to help Judge sterling from your area this sjning I was so Impressed with th quality of the young people from your area, They were Just superb. Wear actively recruiting other physicians for OBUYN, Family Medicine and Emergency Room. 1 have been in the practice of medicine and surfor 32 One thing I do know is that phygery yeare. sicians come and go. They get tired and discouraged andor seek other career opportunities. This ia a natural occurrence. Physicians, eecilly In isolated rural towns, are under a great deal of emotional and physical hour weeks, of strain frequently working -- 70-12- departures ten working days on end without time off. My last day off where I left town for more than 24 hours end was not on call or had patient in th hospital was in January, and then only one day. Prior to that time it wa September. Your hospital is a bit of an oddity; it U a and operated hospital. It has not received a of your tax dollar since 1993. It exist only penny by money collected, grants, gift, and the use of equipment owned and purchased by th Grand County Hospital Board. In spit of that, you have a great rural hospital with excellent equipment and more equipment (mammography ) on th way. There are superb nurses, dedicated doctor who are held to th earn standard of car as the city doctor, excellent support staff in all areas, and an administration which ha remained almost ean trying to batanc th need of ail th variout group it serve, surviving the nationwide assault on healthcare by Medicare, Medicaid and other insurance companies, county-owne- and existing in a d community This community also has an excellent home health agency, dental community, EMS and Search and Reacue and 24 hour emergency room and urgent car service. You are never without emergency health-ca- r service. Last year wae a very eucreaafril year at AMH with a record nunilier of surgical procedure and birtha-numb- ers not seen since th uranium boom. Th hospital is one of th five largest employer of th community, providing 1 10 Job with benefits Our largest growing patient population are persons from San Juan County who feel th services offered by AMH are worth the 100 mile round trip drive to Moab. On doeing thought: Juet because a physician leaves the community, doesn't mean a soap opera story exists. Sometimes people Just want a different life for themaelvee.
