According to a recent holiday survey conducted for Coming Home with Lands End, about 85 percent of all respondents have holiday gift lists that include six or more people and 65 percent said tliey spend more than six hours shopping for those gifts. Selecting and giving meaningful and memorable holiday gifts is a substantial task, but it doesn't have to be stressful," said Allana Baroni, Coming Home spokesperson and author of Simplify the Holidays. Plan ahead and shop early to avoid the holiday rush. Baroni offers the following hints to avoid the frenzy of holiday gift-givin- & Sr k 'fr-- Girls: Junior Girls: Ladles; Queen: 22-5Ladles Petite Dresses: 7-- 14 M f' 0-- 13 6-- 20 7'? Make a List and Check it Twice: Start a holiday gift list file and include the names of family and friends to shop for this year. List each persons hobbies, interests and other biographical information. Keep the list and use it as a source of inspiration when thumbing through catalogs, cruising the Internet or when window shopping. Then clip the catalog page, print out the site or write down the window item that inspired the gift idea and file it under the recipients name. Later, schedule some time to shop for the items in the holiday file. Get the Hard Stuff Out of the Wav: first. Shop for those people, such as a boss or Dont wait until the night before the holiday office party to go in search of gifts for officemates. Baroni suggests making it simple and avoiding hurt feelings by giving the same gift to all Stay At Home: Avoid long shopping lines and massive crowds of harried holiday shoppers altogether by shopping locally. Institute a Family Gift Exchange; If your holiday gift list is getting a little too large, ask family members to d take part in a gift exchange. About (34 percent) of all Coming Home survey respondents say they exchange names at Thanksgiving. Doing so will allow plenty of time to shop for the ultimate gift for everyone on the list. We tend to be very busy sending holiday greetings, entertaining and decorating during December," said Baroni. One way to alleviate some of the stress of the season is to get a jump start on holiday shopping." Keep an Emergency Gift Stash; Stockpile gifts; just in case. It is potentially embarrassing if a holiday guest arrives unexpectedly with a gift and you havent bought them anything. Scented candles, picture frames, holiday mugs and ornaments are great items to keep on hand in a gift closet." Baroni suggests the following simple and festive ideas this season: Personalize it - The quickest way to a unique gift is to personalize it. A set of bath towels or a Polartec throw blanket can be monogrammed with the first letter ofthe familys last name; or engrave a set of tree ornaments with names or special dates to remember. A gift within a gift - Purchase a basket or bowl and fill it with fruit, maybe apples or pineapples. Include a favorite recipe, perhaps for apple muffins or cake. pineapple upside-dow- n An heirloom gift - For the family member who has everything, give a gift thats sure to be passed down to future generations. A special holiday quilt or a cashmere throw blanket should fit the bill. Creative packaging - For a simple and thoughtful gift, Baroni suggests filling a velvet or fleece stocking with goodies that reflect the persons favorite pastime, lifestyle or profession, such as seeds, bulbs and tools for a gardener or pencils, pens and erasers for a teacher. Heartfelt gifts - For someone close to your heart, give the gift of family memories. A scrapbook or holiday memory book is sure to bring a smile. Fill a photo box or frame with pictures of grandchildren and grandma will be very grateful. hard-to-buy-f- P g: The Early Bird Gets the Worm: More than (26 percent) of holiday shoppers surveyed 6ay they begin their holiday shopping in early December.
