Millard, Beaver, Iron and Washington counties in southwest Utah, and Emery and San Juan counties in the southeast part of the state, generally hold birds until later in the year. Some of Utahs best dove hunting occurs in the southern part of the state. The 2000 mourning dove season runs through Sept. 30. Bag and possession limits will be 10 and 20 respectively. The birds normally feed early in the morning and again late in the day. Typical feeding areas are small grain crop fields and weedy patches. Doves are almost exclusively seed eaters. Birds prefer areas with wheatstubble, corn, oats, sunflower and all kinds of weeds. Alter feeding, doves pick up grit along gravel roadways and then fly to water. The middle part of the day is spent loafing and roosting in trees. Doves usually roost in dead trees. DWR takes aim on 432 cougars during 2000 season If hunting conditions are normal in Utah this upcoming season, about 432 cougars will probably be taken by hunters. That number would be similar to last season, when hunters took 435 cougars. The Utah Wildlife Board approved rules and permit numbers for Utahs 2000 - 2001 cougar season at its meeting Aug. 17 in Salt Lake City. In some areas of Utah, cougar harvest is being increased to try and help mule deer and bighorn sheep populations, said Bill Bates, Southeastern Region wildlife manager for the Division of Wildlife Resources. In other areas, harvest is being decreased to protect cougars, Bates said. On the San Juan and Henry Mountains units in southeast Utah, and the Fillmore, Pavant unit in central Utah, cougar harvest is being increased to try and help mule deer populations that are not reaching numbers called for in management plans. To help deer herds in central, northeast and southwest Utah, the West Desert, Vernon unit; the Anthro subunit of the Nine Mile unit; and the Panguitch Lake unit have been switched from limited entry to harvest objective units this season. There is no limit to the number of hunters who can hunt on a harvest objective unit. This increases the chances that the goal of taking a certain number of cougars on these units will be reached. Cougar harvest is being lowered this season on the West Desert, Mountain Range and Fillmore, Oak Creek units in central Utah; the Mount Dutton and Pine Valley, West Pine Valley units in southwest Utah; and the La Sal Mountains unit in southeast Utah. Utahs 2001 - 2001 cougar season will run Dec. 16, 2000 to June 3, 2001 through most of the state. Applications for limited entry cougar permits will be available by Oct. 3 from hunting and fishing license agents, Division of Wildlife Resources offices and hunter education centers and the Divisions Internet web site at www. nr. state, ut. usdwrdwr. htm. Permits to hunt on harvest objective units will be available for purchase at Division offices only, beginning Nov. 28. Allowing hunters to specify more than one unit provides them a quick hunting alternative, if one of their units closes to hunting.
