Higher shelter costs have provided strong upward pressure on the overall index this month and in February, renters costs were up 0.2 percent and home owners equivalent rent of primary residence advanced 0.3 percent. The fuels and utilities index rose 0.6 percent over the month, and measures 2.6 percent higher than a year ago. Utility natural gas costs advanced 2.5 percent in February, following a 9.0 increase in January. Utility costs have risen a notable 9.0 percent from a year ago. The household furnishings and operations index increased 0.5 percent for the month, and posted a gain of 23 percent over the past 12 months. Overall transportation costs advanced 0.9 percent over the month, and 6.0 percent over the year. Gasoline prices jumped up 3.4 percent in February, following a decline of 1.6 percent in January.
