The action is within the Fish Creek Wilderness Canyon Study Area (UT060-204- ) and is proposed by the Monticeilo Field Office. Moonhouse Ruin was once thought of as a remote and amazing place, and althougn it is amazing, it Is less remote than many people realize. Many of us wish it would remain a secret, but the Moonhouse Ruin site continues to see increasing visitation. Docu- mented visitation to Moonhouse in 1999 was 993 people (although actual use is almost always greater than documented use). Concerns about deterioiation and potential instability of the archaeological site have resulted in the Monticeilo Field Office requesting that visitors to the Moonhouse Ruin site do not enter the structure itself. Visitors are welcome to view the site from close by but are asked to refrain from going into the dwelling. Visitors should be aware that this type of user etiquette is encouraged at all cultural sites. A sign requesting visitors do not enter will he placed prior to reaching the McCloyd canyon rim (SESW Sec 35, T38 S. Range I9E) in the Fish Creek Canyon Wilderness Study Area. The sign has been determined to be a facility" that clearly protects or enhances tha lands wi!-- j derness values, specifically the cultural resources which were found to be a supplemental wilderness value in the original wilderness study area inventory. The request is a voluntary action on the part of visitors and the BLM will continue to monitor the site to determine the success of this voluntary action. If the voluntary action is not effective and present trends continue, permanent site closure is an option that would be considered. The BLM will post a sign with this inthe formation on Moonhouse trail at the end of the 30 day EMP notification period ending April 5, 2000. Any comments concerning this action should be directed to: Kent E. Walter Field Manager Monticeilo Field Office P.0.
