This made possible the following of the or and the opening up of the mine below the permanent water level; It Is because these ores have carried good silver values that the mine has been profitably operated under the adverse conditions existing; this would not have been the case otherwise, as smelting, freight end J1 operating costs are now so high us to make it Impossible to mine any but the higher grades of ore. It la therefore a matter o? congratulation that all the work, permitting the operation below the water, waa finished at such an opportune time. The development In this area of the mine has been pushed to Insure as much product aa possible. "The results of the geological study and the underground explorations have convinced the management that there exists s parallel ore son approximately 2600 feet east of the one In which the mine Is being operated. It was determined to sink a shaft at that point and develop that sone; accordingly the work was started and the shaft so placed that railroad track could reach It both above and below on the mountainside. These tracks have been partially completed and the shaft sunk 100 feet. Th ground through which it passed proved to be particularly unstable and this has necessitated concreting; this part of the work wdll be finished In March and sinking will then be resumed and carried dewn to the water level, estimated to be at 2000 feet! The rompanya ownership on that anticipated ore sone has mora than twice the extent of that on the present sone; therefore If s good mine can be eatabllahed there It will add greatly to the life and resulU of the operation." LI oWmhti - Bhiptncnts due to tnaufflclant snowfall, had Interfered greatly with maintaining a normal production at the Bouth Hecla. So far thla year, he said, the company has sent down only seven r on its own account, while the lessee, have shipped about five cars. ' The manager added that the physical condition of th Bouth Hecla was never better than at h present time and said that he and his associates hailed with delight the storm that was prevailing in the hills, being confident that there would be, in the space of a day or two more., eriough snow to make the hauling of ore much easier. Asked the planned consoll-dario- n of the Albion and groups of the Watson interests with that of the Mineral Flat ground, held by the Knight Interests, Mr. Watson said that all thla was yet purely In a preliminary elate and nothing definite could be said until after the meetings of stockholders of the companies concerned. Among the oil men from the older fields who have come to Holbrook recently to look Into the oil poaaibllltlea of this section Is W. H. Hlrkey of Khawnse, Okla. That he was satisfied with what he saw and heard while In the field Is evidenced by tha fact that, before leaving, he tied up considerable land, which he figures on developing. Mr. Hickey has operated tn the Oklahoma oil fields for a number of years and has also spent some time In the Ranger field. It Is because he sees a great similarity In the geological formation and surface indications In the Holbrook field, as compared with the Oklahoma and Ranger fields, that he decided to invest here. He was amaxed at tha big prices asked and obtained in the Ranger field and, while he does not pretend they are unjustified, he wants to get In closer to the ground floor, as he did here. He says that with the development of oil, Holbrook will go through the same experience aa Ranger. (Senator B. O. Mayfield, president of the Hopl Oil company, has just returned after a hurried trip to his Bouth Carolina home, where he waa called to try an Important lawsuit. On his way back he stopped over and made a careful examination of the Texas fields of Brown-wooRanger and Fast land. He says the half has never been told of thev Texas fields and, speaking of Brownwood In he says, "For all ths world particular, it Is a duplicate of the Holbrook field, with Its fumeroles aqd other Indications of oil and gas." Senator Mayfield Is again at the Hopl hell and will crowd work to the limit. Recent rain and snowstorms have been of great benefit to him and other oil operators, as they Insure a bountiful supply of water for some time to come. No stock In the Hopl Oil company has been sold to the general public up to this time, practically the entire cost having been borne by Senator Mayfield himself. The final load of material for the standard drilling rig of the Holbrook Oil company was landed at the site of the well last Saturday. This site was selected by Professor Major When he had practically the entire field to choose from, and Its possibilities are believed to be of the best. The management also announces that It has secured another rig. which will shortly be placed on another section of their ground about four miles from town and near where the Development company reApache Oil cently spudded In its first well. From the territory In the indications surface vicinity of the Apache Is considered most promising snd the Holbrook Oil company will help to prove It up. The A da mans Oil company Is still In the hard cap rock, which extends from th surface to a depth of about 400 feet, hut the drillers ar now making much While this hard cap better progress. rock Is very hard on the bit, and makes drilling quite slow, it Is looked upon by the geologists with great favor. To them It carries assurance that It has sealed In what oil and gas were ever In the ground, while a softer formation would have allowed Its escape. Colonel Pufftnburg. the company's geologist, has written from his Oklahoma home that he will be In Holbrook for a viatt of Inspection as soon as he recovers from the "flu. and In the letter he reiterates his confidence tiat oil will be struck In the weli now being drilled. d ; for We collect for everybody.
