According to the National Hoard of Fire Underwriters, estimated losses for July totalled nearly $11,000,000 an increase of 20 per cent over the same month last year. This was a new high record for the month. Our till for waste by fire for the first seven months of the year stands at the stupendous figure of $338,301,000. That is more than was recorded in any entire year from 1933 through 1912. And losses for period ending July 31 amount to well over dollars. Read those figures again. Try to visualize them in terms of homes, businesses-products- , labor savings. Think for a moment of the 10,000 lives that fire destroys each year a total which may well exceed in 1916 if present carelessness continues. Then ask yourself if you. because of ignorance, carelessness or just plain inertia have been responsible for part of the lass or may be responsible for part of the loss that will occur next month or next year. Fire prevention is very largely an individual matter. Its up to the homeowner, in short, the businessman, the employee its up to you. Its your problem just as much as its anyone elses problem. And your property and your life are involved. This year, due to the record loss, efforts to make us conscious of what is happening. If we are to lick fire, we must think of fire and fight fire every week of the year. By George Peck The depression of the 1930a and the Second World War introduced an epidemic of new words terms and phrases into the Eiglish language, not to mention a countless number of alphabetical bureaus. Your correspondent humbly begs pardon for having fallen a victim to this wordcoining contagion and, with your permission. he would like to inject still another new caption into the already badly overcrowded maze of recently coined names, Sixth Column." Prior to the Second World War and while it was in progress, we heard much about "Fifth Coumn activities in Europe, and their paralyzing and devastating effects upon Poland, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Holland, Belgium. France, and even upon England. Thanks to our Federal Bureau of Investigation and other governmental agencies, the "Fifth Colto-wi- t, th half-a-billi- on umn was checkmated in America before it could get in its deadly work. But today in the United States there is a "Sixth Column. It is a threat to our welfare and security. This Sixth Column is especially dangerous because as a nation and individuals we seem to be unaware of its existence. Many of those who make up its membership, would inas far dignantly deny belonging to it as they are concerned, it is a secret organization and they are not even in on the secret. As I see it. this Sixth Column is made up of three principal groups of citizens : The First takes in those countless thousands of native-bor- n Americans who see in the present situation, a failure of HOMESTEADS FOR VETERANS The Interior department at Washington announces opening to homestead entry of 7,527 acres of public land in the Klamath, California irrigation projects. The applications may be sent to the Bureau of Reclamation at Klamath Falls, Oregon, or to the regional director of the Bureau at Sacramento, California, or direct to the Department at Washington, D. C. The land will bo open to honorably discharged veterans with 90 days service or more in the armed forces. There will be other similar openings of projects through the west in Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, and Oregon, Washington Wyoming.
