Frank ss extravagant spending of thousands of dol- lars and it is quite possible that there are acres of old road-bed- s lying through- out the state which can not be reclaimed farming or grazing purposes. Of course the ideal pattern for road build- ing is that they should be built to avoid extreme grades as well as to make them shortest way possible between cities and towns, but these thoughts have not ruled in all cases heretofore. In fact many have expressed the thought that the reason of the neglect in building roades permanent places is with the hope of future work for the engineers, the surveyors and the road contractors. There is truly a great contrast between the highway construction and the railroads. The railroads were built, in the first place, in as straight a line as possible and since that there have been comparatively few chanjea made. It seems that the building of roads could be done with the same degree of forethought. Will the new improvement on the highway be a permanent construction or will we, in a few years, have to spend thousands of dollars more to make a further change? IS TJIK NEW ItOAD A PERMANENT ONE? by-pa- I H Subscription 1931, The Utah Public Service commission has granted permission to make a change in over the road which crosses the Utah-Idah- o tracks railroad Central the just south of Millville on the way to Hy- rum. The cause for the change is to avoid use of the narrow single-lan- e bypass which is somewhat of a hazard. The petition to the road changed was first presented members of the Cache County Parent- by Teachers association. We are wonder- ing; however, about the new location of the road. Will it be built in the proper place to make of it a permanent improvement? As we have observed the road building in Utah there has not been enough forethought exercised by the engineers. Highways have been constructed in hundreds of instances only to be abandoned a few years after their completion. This has resulted in the A K E MttSTTAXMfHVJ. I David W.
