But many Americans, especially returning war veterans and their families, are having great difficulty in finding enough living space to accommodate a hat. The housing shortage which has plagued the Nation for the past three or four years is now getting worse, not better. The sharp rise in the marriage and birth rates since , increasing the number and size of families, together with the lack of building materials and the high construction costs which have kept home building at a negligible level, are making housing facilities the scarcest of all necessities in America. The question is, where are all the housing have nots going to live? Many will double up with relatives but that wont solve the problem as a whole, even temporarily. Additional facilities must be found. Property owners with extra rooms in their homes can render a fine public service and increase their incomes by renting these rooms. It is not sufficient that we feel sorry for families or individuals who lack an adequate place to live. We must do all we can to help them. Making all extra living space available to them seems to be the only immediate answer. It is just as essential to national morale now as it wras in wartime for families and individuals to have a place to hang their hats.
