Realizing the importance of a clean milk supply lor ine city, the Chamber of Commerce, cooperating with city health officer Evan Western, launched a concentrated movement to have the city board of health and city commission adopt the ordinance and code recommended by the U. 8. public health service for milk production and distribution. For several months they conducted surveys, held meetings and worked with Mr. Western and the state board of health, gathering data concerning the milk supply. Tlie evidence they uncovered was rather startling to most Logan, ites. The Chamber of Commerce committee discovered that the majority of milk being dispensed in the city had a bacteria count greater than the maximum alstate board of lowed by the health's safe milk regulations. At that time, the survey showed, 19.2 per cent of the milk being dispensed In the city had a bacteria count from 50.000 to lOO'OOO, which Is more than the maximum allowed under the U. S. public health service ordinance and code, and 15.4 per cent over 100,000 count. The data wus gathered from 3000 milk samples collected from 75 dairies serving the city from 1940 to 1943. At the present time, dud to adoption by the city of the new milk ordinance and code, seven dairies have cooperated to the extent they now were qualified to produce grade A fiiilk. In contrast, the bacteria count of the milk supply of those dairies Is lower than 30,000. The cooperating dairies, Cache Meadow Farms, operated by Dwyth Daines; R. J. Steed Dairy; Royal Dairy, M. B. Fox, manager; Gibbons dairy; Webber Dairy, Byron Webber, operator; Keller Dairy, Milton Keler, operator ,have spent $75,000 to provide aproximately new equipment and buildings for producing better milk. Three of are planning adthese concerns ditional new construction. Possibly one of the outstanding factors that has developed from the program is the increased desire of the citys homemakers to purchase better quality milk, Mr. Western said. This will be an Important item in curbing milk-bordiseases. As an incentive to provide- the higest quality milk possible in the city, the Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring awards for all dairies which can produce a certain grade oR milk. The standard for award will be quality, flavor, sanitation of pro. duction, bacteria count and cooperation with the new ordinance. The Chamber of Commerce officials are considering a plague-typ- e award for the successful dairies. ne - Playground Day August 8 will Logan city playgrounds sponsor their annual hike and play day August 8, according to Glen Worthington, city recreation director. Children enrolled at all playgrounds will assemble at their respective headquarters and hike to Willow park. A softball game under direction of Marva Funk and Lois Downs Is scheduled for 10 a. m.; followed by races and other games. (Prizes will be awarded winners. Following luncheon, .a program will be presented by Miss Downs and Esther Erickson and the group will hike back to town and have their choice of .attending a moving, picture show or supervised swimming at the Logan senior high school pool Home on Furlough Lieutenant E. P. Hunsaker, husband of Bertha Monson Hunsak- er, is spending a leave with his family after serving with the army transportation corps in the Philippines. 15-d- |
