WILLIAM C. ENGLAND, JAMES W. ENGLAND DAVID W. ENGLAND Entered a Pcwt Office Managing Kovembe, at Logan, Utah, under the Act pr-Cl- er co-nt- ry a nt RUBBLE In the, past few days we have been getting fresh impressions of the devastation wrought by air war. Pictures of Cologne Cathedral standing starkly amid the rubble that was once a city bear out the report that of its 3,320 acres of built-u- p area 2,010 acres have been razed. And the stories of incendiary bombs turning Japans cities into infernos the size of Manhattan Island give us a picture of destruction never approached in the history of war. The first reaction is one of encouragement at this evidence of Allied power. From examination of German cities already overrun Allied experts gain the assurance that many others are so wrecked as not only to have ceased producing supplies hut to have become millstones dragging down the German military machine. It is as if cities like Pittsburgh, Sheffield, Detroit, or Birmingham had had the whole center knocked out of them. The great fire in Chicago or the San Francisco earthquake were small compared with the conflagrations in Tokyo and Nagoya. The Germans and the Japanese are now receiving payment with interest for the bombing of London and Pearl Harbor. The devastation wrought by bombing promises an earlier end of the war. From that standpoint Allied peoples must welcome the grim evidences of their air power at work. But there can be few men and women with imagination who do not try to draw a shade against the full picture of horror and misery wreaked by their defenders. The fact that the enemy first bombed civilians and that British-Ameriea- n bombing aims for military objectives does not wholly free us from a feeling of sharing in a horrible business. We cannot allow ourselves to be appalled or put The home front like the soldier must stand up to the grim necessity to carry through and break the enemys power completely. But it may be just as well for the home front to realize that it is in effect giving the orders Which make rubble of cities inhabited cities even as it gives the orders which send its own sons into battle. For the more fully civilians share this sense of responsibility, the more they will share the soldiers hatred of what he has to do. The more fully, too, they may share his determination to prevent the necessity arising again. The more the civilian learns of War the more he will support peace.
