I'm sure that I now have a keener appre- ciation for America and our two party political system. I hope the day shall never come when one party shall become so strongly entrenched n that it can not be by the other. Pm happy to be affiliated with the new, young Republican party, which has been so valiantly crusading for the return to the American principles and to constitutional government. This investigation has produced the following: 1 That I)r. Francis W. Kirkham, was not the sole author of the pamphlet, although he worked on its preparation and checked it after the material had been assembled. 2 That two members of the law enforcement branch of Gov. Herbert B. Maws state liquor control commission were prime movers in the alleged Trice city investigations on which the pamphlet was based. Their jobs are political and depend upon Maws reelection.. 3 That Gordon Taylor Hyde, chairman of Governor Maws state finance commission and a sort of chairman of the Maw campaign, had a copy of the report on which the pamphlet is based more than a week before the printed document And at that time Mr. Hyde declared in effect: We are going toappeared. publicize it. Mr. Hydes job depends upon the success of the Maw campaign. ' 4 That the whole pamphlet project appears to have been purely a political move, and not one born of a desire to improve the moral status of the city of Trice. If uplift were the purpose there are fertile fields much nearer to the investigators than is Trice. Why was the News investigation conducted. It was conducted in the public interest. of have tried to influence and to conduct a clean and wholesome campaign; I have been fortunate in having as my I high-minde- so-call- On behalf of the Republican party of Cache county, its officers le and particularly the Republican candidates, I express sincere apof preciation to all party workers who have so graciously given their time and means to further this cause. (Paid Political Advertisement Cache County Republican Norman Christensen) By Committee The pamphlet Morals and the Mayor, signed by Dr. Kirkham and purporting to give a report on vice conditions in the city of Trice, has stirred up talk, gossip, controversy and speculation. It made news. . It aroused the ire of the citizenry of Trice and Carbon County, who has branded it an infamous smear on Trice, overlooking its virtues and exaggerating its vices. ed im-possb- . The Deseret News has conducted an investigation into the origin and aims of the pamphlet, Morals and the Mayor. This is a report of findings and conclusions. free-lovin- d men embued associates a group of with the spirit of good citizenship and determined to promote good government. It is unfortunate when political campaigners resort to mud slinging and personal attacks upon candidates of the opposite party. Unless this sort of thing is stopped, unless-w-e can get all campaigning upon a higher plane it will be to get good men and women or any people of high character to accept nominations to any public office. More vital, however, than type or calibre of campaign is the rising protest of the Amercan people which will culminate tomorrow in their vote against the New Deal, the Fourth Term, and their attendant evils. I am very optimistic about the outcome of the election in Cache county as is every one of the Republican candidates. I shall be proud to have had a part in the election of men such as are offered by the Republican party. From the very top of the ticket with Governor Thomas E. Dewey, the personification of youthful vigor and vision, a loyal and aggressive defender of American principles and policies, down to the, clean, wholesome characters of the men who make up our local county ticket such as Whiting, Harris, Lewis, Snow Weston, Fuhriman, Call, and Perry are men unencumbered by political entanglements or obligations. . By David A. Robinson Our party has tried to bring before the people the issues and to acquaint the public with g the dangers which are facing the liberty pople of America. In Cache county . Accordingly, The Deseret News printed a complete news story on the attitude of Trice citizens and their protest visit to the capitol. On the following publication day, Dr. Kirkham asked the News to print his side of the story. His statement was published in its entirety without one word changed or omitted. Dr. Kirkhams picture also was run for good measure. i Since the articles appeared in the News, we have had a number of inquiries asking who or what group was behind the pamphlet. It was to find the answer to these questions that our investigation was made. The first step in the probe was to interview Dr. Kirkham himself. Dr. Kirkham admitted that he did not write the pamphlet as it appeared. The most he claimed was that he helped! assemble it and checked the material. Obviously, then, he is not its principal author, although he is the cnly name which appears thereon and he has attempted to take full responsibility for it. Dr. Kirkham indicated that he had placed the material into the hands of politicians. lie admitted that he had not paid for either its publication or its distribution. The printing and widespread mailing of this pamphlet would cost several thousand dollars. It shouldnt be hard to imagine whence the money came. Dr. Kirkham insisted that he was shocked at conditions in Trice. But he admitted that he had not conducted a similar study in Salt Lake. Ogden, Tark City, Bingham or any other important Utah city. Dr! Kirkham explained that his attention had been directed to Trice by a report of some investigators. He was reluctant to say who the investigators were, but finally on close questioning he indicated that they were officers of the liquor commission. Before answering any more questions, Dr. Kirkham said he would like to speak to some of his associates in the pamphlet project. lie promised to return to give the full story behind the Morals and the Mayor document after he had consulted with them, provided we were unable to get it from other sources. But when lie returned he guardedly reported that he was under arrest, that he had hired an attorney, and that he had been advised by his attorney not to talk. From other sources, we were able to confirm and round out Dr. Kirkhams story. The thing that puzzles most, unless we assume that the pamphleteers motives are ulterior, is the secrecy surrounding the authors of the pamphlet and the prime movers of the project. If the panjphlets purpose is and intended to combat vice, why are its principal sponsors so afraid to be known in the project? high-mind- ed The purpose of our investigation into Morals and the Mayor was not to prove or disprove the contents of the pamphlet. Nearly everyone who is acquainted with the situation knows that Trice is not free from vice conditions, but neither are Salt Lake, Ogden, Trovo, Bingham, Helper or most any other city of any size. Whether Trice is more or less free is a matter for debate and the question is not resolved by the pam- phlet. But the purpose of our investigation was to determine if possible the pamphlets origin an daims so as to answer the inquiries and lay low the rumors which sprang up about this or that group or organization being behind the pamphlets preparation and distribution. From results of our inquiries, we are convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the pamphlets purpose is political and not moral. Its aims is not to clean up the city of Trice but rather to destroy J. Bracken Lee as a candidate for governor. Furthermore, we are convinced that no group, except politicians, are responsible for the preparation and distribution of the pamphlet. It is our opinion that the politicians are attempting tq use morals and an uplift movement as a smoke screen to hide purely partisan purposes. Taid Tolitical Advertisement by T. S. Curtis im- |
