With s.mphctiy and beauty as their keynotes, American designers hae gone to t:wn to keep milady is perfe.tly clothed as ever. Naturally, new fashions to fit the times have come Into being. Most universal seems to be the street length dinner dress or suit. More novelty in detail and workmanship finds the dress with an line adorned in This sequins or pearl beads. kind of dress finds its companion in a feathered hat. The little dinner suit is more conservative, either in a discreet black woolen or more dramatic woolen with ermine collar and cuffs. Afternoon Drees The afternoon dress also has come Into style, perhaps one should add "once more." Vegetables cooked by the usual kitchen methods may lose about 29 per cent of their vitamin B1 according to Miss Elna Miller! nutritionist for the Utah State Agricultural college Extension ser-- v ice. Much depends on the kind of food cooked, the way it is prepared for cooking, the temperature at which it is cooked, how long it is cooked, and other conditions. To avoid unnecessary loss of vitamin Bl, there are a few simple precautions: Don't use soda in cooking vegetables. Soda destroys not only the vitamin Bl, but also other vitamins. Bl passes very readily into the cooking water from most vegetables often more than 25 per cent is lost this way, unless some use is made of the cooking water. Sometimes the water Is used as a concentratte and served with the vegetable, made Into a sauce and served over the vegetable, or added to gravy or put into the soup pot. It may be used as the liquid in. Jellied salads. Bl is destroyed to an even greater extent In cooked meats than In cooked vegetables. Thats because of the higher cooking temperatures and longer cooking time. Very little Bl is destroyed in frying meats as chops or steaks, compared with the amount destroyed in roasting, which takes a longer time and higher temperature. In general, the loss of the vitamin Bl in cooking meats Is roughly 40 per cent. dresses for restaurants and general evening wear. These are In stiff fabrics or soft silks or woolens.
