Cowles to be named president of the U. of U. for it carried w ith it a grave responsibility to the young people of our state. It id aldo a distinct credit to the members of the Board of Regents that they saw fit to name a Utah man after a careful consideration of some 80 men whose names had been discussed for the past several months. We feel that no better choice could be made for why should not a Utah product be elevated to that high position? Utah boasts of her schools and she boasts of the fine men they have turned out of the walls of learning to the administration of various businesses, government positions and educational institutions; and this appointment adds one more to the list. We have been fortunate in the past to have men of ability hold the reins of presidency over our institutions. The first president, John R. Tarlcs was born May 7, 1833 at Tiffin, Ohio. At the age of 28 years he came to Utah and settled in Draper w here he was converted to the Mormon faith. He commenced teaching school there. Only eight years later he was named the president of the University of Deseret and remained in that position for nearly twenty-fiv- e years. Dr. Joseph T. Kingsbury, who served as president at two different periods, was born in East Weber, Utah, November 4 1853. His parents were members of the L. D.S. church and he received his early education in the schools of Utah. Dr. James E. Talmage was born in Hungerford, England, September 21, 1862. He was baptized into the Mormon church at the age of eleven and when 14 years old he with his parents and other members of the family came to Salt Lake City. He obtained his early schooling at the Brigham Young Academy at Provo. In 1894 he was named as professor of geology and at the same time was elevated to the presidency and served as such for some three years. We in Cache Valley all know of the other two presidents, Dr. John A. Widstoe and Dr. George Thomas for they were also presidents of the Utah State Agricultural college before going to the University of Utah. President Widstoe was born in Norway, January 31, 1872 and came to Utah in 1884 with his mother and younger brother. They settled in Logan. They joined the church while in their native country. Dr. Thomas was born in Hyde Park, Utah, December 29, 1866. He has been president of the U. for the past twenty years. All of the presidents of the University as well as all the presidents of the Agriculutral college have been wondreful men. They have rendered the state valuable service and we hope the new president, Dr. Cowles, will continue in the same way. We wish him success in his new position. He wTas born in Chester, Sanpete County, Utah, April 13, 1880. His parents came to Utah as converts of the Mormon'church.
