Take a typical example, General Motors, and you can see for yourself that Defense Comes First si not an idle slogan for this or any other corporation that has assumed vast obligations in the national defense program. According to C. E. Wilson, president of General Motors, his corporation is substantially making good on all contracts for defense materials which it has undertaken, and in many cases has been able mpiort-antl- y to anticipate the schedule deliveries of such materials. The corporation produced in the United States and Canada: $37,700,000, fourth quarter of 1940 $56, COO, 000, first quarter of 1941 $75,200,000 second quarter of 1941 $115,000,000, estimated third quarter of 1941 $160,000,000, estimated fourth quarter of 1941 A total of more than $400,000,000 of defense that will have been produced in 1941. ma-teri- ol General Motors has received order for $1,200,000,000 worth of defense material. Approximately $225,000,000 worth has been shpiped to date, and about $2000,000,000 more in material will be produced yet this year, leaving about '$775,000,000 on order to be produced after January 1, 1942. In addition, the Yellow Truck and Coach Manufacturing company, in which General Motors has a majority interest, has received orders for $179,000,000 and has shipped $95,000,000 of defense ma- terial Impressive and stimulating, and pretty well indicative of the thinking and action of Americas industrial leaders, were the closing remarks of a recent address of General Motors president: If we are going to get this defense program done in time and produce sufficient consumer durable goods to maintain an acceptable standard of living, then the men who know how to do the job must put on the old overalls and really go at it. This applies equally to executives, engineers, mechanics and workmen. General Motors is ready to do its part in such a program. home, where Mr. Smith Is" employed.
