On this occasion, Mr. Black decided that he tould help himself to his own medicine and be on his way." But old Mr. Black made a mistake. A little while later, when Bertie went to look for another man's prescription, she couldn't find it , She did find old Mr. Black's, though, and immediately sensed what had happened. The old fellow had taken the wrong powder. And the powder he had taken was a DEADLY POISON! I didnt know what to do," says Bertie. We had no car, and Mr. Black and his wife had a long head start on us. But somehow we had to stop him before he took one of those powders. His own life, and father's reputation as a physician both were at stake. I telephoned a store on the other side of the river, but they had passed there. Father was prostrated by the enormity of the situation. I ran to the railroad station where a man named Henderson rented cars, but be didnt have one in the place. I only had to wait a few minutes before one came In, but those few minutes seemed hours to me. OS on a Wild Automobile Ride. Finally, though, a car came in, and Bertie climbed In. Henderson, the owner, had a wooden leg, but he could drive after a fashion. Also, he knew a lad who knew the people on the other side of the river. He found him and took him along. They set out at breakneck speed for the river. When they got there they ran Into further difficulties. The only way to get across the river hand ferry, operated by pulling on a was by means of an cable that stretched from one bank to the other. It had broken loose and was ten feet out in the water when they got there, but that didnt stop Henderson. He drove right out into the water after It. He got it back, drove the car aboard, and they started on their journey across the river. It was slow going, pulling that ferry across the river. Bertie thought theyd never get to the other side. All the way over, sinister pictures were flashing through her mind pictures of old Mr. Black reaching his home in the hills and opening that package of deadly powders pictures of old Mr. Black riding down from the hills in a shiny black hearse of her fathers reputation being ruined and his practice going to pot, while that poky old ferry crawled at a snail's pace across the Ohio. Eventually, they got to the other side and started up into the We went over hills. Such a ride Bertie never had in her life. unbroken paths and up runs and creeks, she says, until I thought I should never see home again. We went down bare hillsides, where there wasnt even a sign of a trail, drove through gulleys, until finally we came to a moonshiners place, far up the side of the mountain, and there we stopped. A car couldnt be made to go any farther into that rough, bare, mountainous country. b e heart-shape- d NEW COTTON KNITS B CHERIE NICHOLAS Henderson and the lad climbed out of the car and started off alone, leaving me behind at the moonshiners cabin. I was there an hour, and I never spent such an anxious hour in my life." You know, boys and girls, its one thing to be doing something to avert a tragedy, but its still another to be standing idly by, waiting for the outcome. For a full hour Bertie sat there in an anguish of suspense. Then Henderson and the lad came back again with good news! They had reached the Black homestead in time to prevent old Mr. Black from taking any of those terrible powders. They had the package with them, full and unopened. A life had been saved. And Bertie's dad's reputation as a physician was as good as it ever was. WNU Service. B. C. Carved From Living Stone Living stone is a term applied in sculpture to stone in its native or original position as contrasted with marble or granite which has been quarried. The Lion of Lucerne in Switzerland, the Confederate memorial on Stone mountain in Georgia and the Rushmore memorial in South Dakota are among the famous pieces of sculpture carved from living rock. The light emitted from the ancient lighthouse at Alexandria, one of the seven wonders of the world, came from a huge wood fire which was kept burning at the summit continuously during the night. GOWN FINDS MUCH FAVOR TWO-PURPOS- E By CHERIE NICHOLAS The tendency these days is to have a foundation dress with endless accessory ensembles in reserve so as to change the character of the costume to tune to occasion. The newest entrant into the interchangeable costume realm is the dress of black or navy crepe which is sold with a full length detachable front panel of pleated crepe in white or some contrasting color. For the practical hours of the day the dress is worn without the panel and you can run about town looking trim and tailored. Or in the office you will appear "neat as a pin dressed appropriately for business hours. To keep the bridge date or accept an informal dinner engagement, you can don the white or colorful pleated panel in a jiffy. It fastens up over the shoulders and ( there are ribbon straps and bows to adjust to make it look like an integral part of the dress, for it extends from neck to hem. They Got There in Time. Atk your neighborl No one likes to quarrel with the statement that the dog is mans best friend. In fact, we all like to believe it without question. But neighborhood dogs that insist on staining prized ornamental evergreens and shrubbery certainly do put a heavy strain on friendship. Home owners have faced this problem sadly, angrily and ineffectually until recently a very simple solution came to light. All that you do is spray the lower branches of your evergreens and shrubs with a little nicotine sulphate mixed in water. Its harmless to plants harmless to the dogs and brings a tremendous relief to frayed tempers. You see, the desired result comes because dogs do not like the nicotine sulphate odor and give a wide berth to any spot where that odor is found.
