The President said that the policy of the American government would continue to he that of the "good neighbor; that we would maintain rigid neutrality toward any and all belligerent powers; that we would keep free of foreign entanglements and that we would build up our national defense sere ices sufficiently to make us a dangerous enemy for any country eyeing our possessions and territories with covetous eyes. That declaration of policy was applauded ly Republican as well as Democratic newspapers and spokesmen, and it is apparent that it is supported by reasonable and forcsighted men of all political parties. The Presidents attitude in this ital matter is typically American. Fortunately, we are remote from Kurope. Our people are anything hut belligerent and envy no empire or nation. The American public wishes to maintain friendly relations with all powers and to carry on lawful world commerce without restraint. That is the way toward permanent peace. The Spanish revolution has again brought fear of war to the world. Put, as the President said, the American people will fight no other nation's battles and will insist that its rights he respected, and that its government remain neutral in spirit and deed.
