Radio Service Engineer Fart BALANCING COIL markedly different condition is found where there is an electrostatic coupling between the line and the noise source. Such a noise source is one in which relatively little cuirent flows, but which is generating relatively high voltages. In practice, this occurs in any magnetic device in which the circuit is epened while current is flowing, such as in a magnetic or vibrating battery charger, any n device, such small as a vacuum cleaner, food mixer, etc, or even an electric light bulb loose in its socket, or with a partially fractured filament about to burn out. It will be noted that the voltages induced in either side of the line, or in adjacent loops cf the line, are all In such a direction as to give rise to current flowing to a ground and thus do not cancel out. The net effect is what voltages induced along either side one of the line add directly to another and thus provide a relatively large induced voltage that currents will give nse to noise the passing to ground through line and, of ccurse, noise lx. the radio receiver to which the line is attached, unless special means are provided for its elimination. motor-drive- This latter can most conveniently and economically be provided in the form of a balancing coil, the line terminates in a coil which, as implied by this discussion, must consist of two halves in that are as nearly identical their physical and electrical properties as it Is possible to make them. Mr. Chatterton was born at Barnsley, England, August 28, 1850. He came to this country at the age of 12 and made his home at Franklin. He worked as a carpenter and farmer and helped build many of the pioneer buildings in Franklin. On April 29, 1872, he married Elizabeth M. Stones in the Endowment house In Salt Lake City, and is survived by the following sons d Maff$eft At Franklin p. m. this coil, the two sides of the line are conneoted, while the center point is connected to ground, or to such other datum point as will drain tins system of the induced noise current without impressing any of this voltage upon the radio receiver. This requirement justifies more extended discussion and will be given further attention later, but at this juncture it need be pointed out only that if sufficiently close approach to sym metry m the entire antenna system, and especially m this terminating coil, is realized, it is obvious that the currents resultmg from the electrostatically-inducevoltages are opposed to one another in their effect on the receiver, and their influence largely eliminated. While we use here a simple magnetic coupling between the balancing coil and the radio receiver, this simple arrangement is of value only under certain limited conditions. For this reason, a host of coupling circuits and coil arrangements have been developed; the of which cannot, characteristics for lack of space, be discussed here. It is sufficient for the moment to say than regardless of arthe detailed received-couplinrangements which must be provided, they must include complete symmetry insofar as the noise currents picked up by the line are concerned, and that these currents must be drained from the system through couplings to the radio receiver which are completely symmetrical and opposed with respect to noise currents.
