Employment of Charles Evans Huffces, former secretary of state, to represent the oft Industry in hearing! before the fed era! oil conservation board, and receipt of a $250,000 donation for scientific research and scholarships were outstanding features of today's session of the sixth annual convention of the American Petroleum institute here. These were matters developed In the meeting of the board of directors. Before the group meetings, devoted to special subjects, important matters Included presentation of the 'general balance sheet' as first unit in a uniform system of oil accounting for the industry, and announcement that the Industry haa developed fuels for high compression automobile sngkies and is waiting upon the automotive industry to take the next move for advancement of automobile development. The selection of former Secretary of State Hughes as counsel marks an important step by the industry, it leaders said, in relations with the fed eral oil conservation board. The appointment, as expressed in a letter of acceptance from Mr. Hughes, mads public by the board, is based upon the understanding of a cordial and thoroughgoing cooperation with the federal board. SHOULD BE WELCOME. Tt seems to me, the Hughes letthat such an impartial Inquiry conducted by men so eminently competent and disinterested as are the members of the federal oil conservation board, should, be welcomed, so that all the exigencies of the Industry and all practicable methods of promoting the economical production and use of oil may be carefully considered " The 9250,000 donation to the Institute was pledged bv the Universal Oil Products company of Chicago in a letter read before the board by H. J Halle, its president. That company, of which J Ogden' Armour was one of the founders, is a technical and scientific organisation, exclusively engaged in technical and scientific activities connected with the petroleum Industry. - The donation follows and supplements a $500,000 donation by John D. Rockefeller announced last year. The fund will be available over a period of five years, at the rate' of $50,000 a year, and was suggested for use in establishment of scholarships in universities and colleges for the study and development of petroleum science.
