Strength and activity of the public utility Issues, more than a dozen of which established new peak prices for the year, was the outstanding development in today'q active stock market. Elsewhere considerable irregularity developed as a heavy professional selling, based on the belief that technical reaction was warranted after nearly five weeks of almost steadily rising prices. The reaction, however, did not get very far, net losses in the pivotal issues being limited to fractions. American Waterworks common was the individual feature, jumping again 8 points to a record price for all time at 1114, or more than double its price on May 31. NEW YORK, July 9 The selection of John W. DavU a the Democratic nominee did not take place until after the clone of the markets today Therefore any market expressions on the nomination must await the reopening tomorrow morning. It was evident before the close of business this afternoon that the chances of Mr. Davis to break the deadlock were excellent Leading stocks advanced briskly most of the day, and before simmering down in the late afternoon the averages established a new high record for the year, at 90c58. Probably the feeling most evident in our financial districts after the nomination was one of relief that the deadlock has finally been broken. At any rate, Wall street as a whole has indicated but small interest in the proceedings up to this time. There is little indication at present that the markets will pay much attention to politics In the near future. The government's forecast of the grain crops confirmed the reports from the belts that generally unsatisfactory crop conditions have prevailed so far as corn was concerned. Incidentally corn crossed the $1 mark for the July contract for the first time since 1990. The foreign exchanges today merely repeated their performance of the previous day. They appeared to be definite marking time until more nema comes from the conference of the premiers of Great Britain and France. Sterling improved to $4 34. but this was declared by international bankers to be a reflection of the possibility that the Bank of England rate would be increased tomorrow rather than any particular optimism expressed marketwlse about the conference. Francs held well above the 5 cent point and indicated neither weakness nor strength. Offerings were reported to be extremely light in most of the foreign exchanges. The weekly reviews of the iron and steel trade did not bear out the predictions made confidently last t week that the turn of the naif year "would bring in new business on a substantial scale. The Iron Age commented that shutdowns of both steel producing and steel consuming plants In the last week and the absence of buying have left the trade without indications of .any new tendencle iron prices no are quoted at $19pig 29 the Jowest po!nt in more perton, Kan !wo"year, and which compares with $26.04 at this time one year ago. soete of tb aant- - etc, and 8oetk for 33 tha whstoMfe trade.
