Show THE UINTAH BASIN RECORD Ute Dasketball Thursday, December 22, 1955 Tourney Plans Are Made Union Wins 3 Gaines Over Weekend, Altamont And Duchesne Drop Contests Union High School had a pretty fair weekend last Thursday, Friday as they came and Saturday through with three wins over visiting teams from Utah and Colorado high schools. Altamont lost two close ones to North Sanpete and North Emery, and Duchesne was dropped by Rangely in the Colorado schools gym. With the sudden loss of their ace center, Snellen Johnson, who will be lost to the team the remainder of the season after suffering a broken ankle at Nephi last week. Coach Glen Allred has begun building to fill the gap, (a job he probably wont be able to complete this season), left by the 62 Johnson, who was looking mighty good on defense as well as offensively. Right now it looks like Sophomore Gordon Bascom and Junior Gary McDonald, a couple of tall boys, might come along to give the Cougars some needed height. Another big kid, Lynn Hullinger, might give Allred a lot of help on the boards. Altamont and North Sanpete, which comes from Mt. Pleasant, battle, with the put on a ding-donLonghorns leading the first and third quarters, but had to yield in the final period to the visitors. The Eagles Final score was title from Duchesne lost a 37-2- 4 Saturday to the green clad kids from Colorado who lost to Union 48-1- 9 on Friday night. Altamont also lost a close 45-4- 3 game to North Emery. Union travels to Oak Creek, Colorado tonight for another over the border games, and then will meet an alumni team next Monday night at the Cougar gym. Then on Dec. 27 they travel to Kamas, and on Dec. 29 and 30 play in a double header at Vernal and in Roosevelt with .Wasatch High and Morgan. Wards - participating were Arcadia, Duchesne, Bridgeland, Tabiona and Hanna. The Sunday School and MIA held their monthly faculty meetings Monday evening at the ward chapeL Bishop Gilbert Combines Seed Bishop Gam Gilbert must not Ijave been as elated over the well he had drilled recently as some of the other fanners. He failed to report how successful he was. They got a nice flow at 255 feet. Could be he has just been too busy with the farm work the past week He has been combining his alfalfa seed on his farm on South Myton Bench. To those not living here, we should let them know what kind of weather we can brag about No need leaving with the birds and going south, if a mild winter is what one is seeking. Mrs. Gill was a former resident here and has many friends who will be glad to hear of her complete recovery. Hugh Evans is home from the BYU for the holidays. FAREWELL PARTY Mr. and Mrs. Jack Gilbert entertained at dinner Friday night complimenting Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Horrocks and family of Duchesne, prior to their leaving for a new assignment. Gilbert has been working with tiie Soil Conservation Service here" for several years. He has been transferred to Murray, where he will work part time and attend the U of U. Having spent his youth in Arcadia, we all have a keen interest in his advancement. Carol Larsen accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Albert Neilson and daughter, Rhea, of Roosevelt, to Sandy, where they spent the week end. Mr, and Mrs. Arden Evans took their daughters, Ann and Mary Ellen to Salt Lake. Little Ann is needing some eye attention, and Mary Ellen some special dental work. All over the operations and eagerly waiting Santas arrival are, Elaine Gilbert, the small daughter of Bishop and Mrs. Gam Gilbert, and Ned Ross, son of Mr. and Mrs. Max Ross. Elaine settled for a tonsilectomy and Ned a hernia. R. G. Ross made a business trip to Salt Lake over the weekend. Mr. and Mrs, Byron Gilbert and family came in from Provo to spend the holidays with Byrons parents', Mr. and Mrs. John Gilbert. Mrs. Elsie Bird and daughter, Mildred, of Roosevelt, were surprised when the new Primary of ficers and teachers' called and spent the afternoon with them. Mrs. Bird was the former president and Mildred a teacher. A beautiful lamp was presented to Mrs. Bird in appreciation for the outstanding work she did while serving as president, Mildred was presented a corsage for her .untiring and dependable work as a teacher. Those attending from here were Gladys Capson.Vera Larsen, Barbara Gilbert, Marva Mae Horrocks, Ora Holgate and Ruth Evans. Refreshments were served. Mr. and Mrs. Hale Holgate went to Salt Lake Friday on business. They took their granddaughter, Sherry Evans in for a medical check-up- . On their return trip they came back by Castle Gate and visited with Mr. and Mrs. Silas Ross. Frederick F. Next to Tommy is beautiful Jan Clayton, who plays Jeff's mother in the n TV series. well-know- BRIDGELAND Funeral Held For Earl Gall On December 14 A large percentage of the Bridges land people attended the funeral services for Earl Gail, Wednesday, Dec. 14, at the Duchesne' LDS stake chapel. Services were conducted by Bishop Carl Van Tassell of the Bridge-lan- d ward. Speakers were Elden Brady, Roy Taylor and Bishop Van musical Tassell The following numbers were presented: vocal duet, Carol Liddell and Jndy ShepThe Old Rugged Cross-- , hard, Ilenna lone Shields, quartet, Marshant, Donna Claybum and Clista Neilsen, Sometime, Somewhere; duet, Carol Liddell and Judy Shephard, Beyond the Sunset, accompanied by Hazel Walters, who played the prelude and postlude music. Prayers were offered by Malcolm Walters and Reece Claybum. The grave was dedicated by J. Alma Smith. The Bridgeland ward Relief Society ladies were in charge of the flowers. Burial was in the Roosevelt cemetery, under the direction of the Olpin Mortuary. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Taylor visited several days during the week at Salt Lake City with relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Liddell were Provo visitors last week, where they went to find an apartment, as Ronald plans to enter the BYU for the winter quarter. Mr. and Mrs. Elden Brady accompanied by Mrs. Harold Warren of Vernal, attended the wedding of their niece, Connie Peterson, at Murray, Saturday. They also visited their children, Mr, and Mrs. Lloyd Brady, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Llsonbee and Carol Ann Brady. entertained her Ruth Walters Sunday School class at a Christmas party, Sunday afternoon at her home. Those present were: Clayton Wright, Dennis Liddell, Ralph Stansfield, Boyd Van Tassell, Dee Murphy, Richard Lamb, Richard Fitzgerald, Carolyn Meyer and Kathryn Lamb. Gerald Murphy of Murray, spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Murphy. ATTEND DRAMA NIGHT A large crowd of Bridgeland people attended the stake Drama Night at Duchesne, Tuesday evening. We were proud of the Christmas act presented by our young folks, which was a very fitting climax to the very entertaining evening. Judy Shephard and Bertie Lisonbee were in charge of the music. ATTEND BANQUET Ladies from Bridgeland attending the banquet given by the Farmerette Club" Wednesday evening at the Arcadia ward house were: Hazel and Ruth Walters, Viola and Judy Shephard, Lilly Mae, Donna and JoyLeen Claybum, Helen and Clista Neilsen, Ilenna Shields, Letta Meyer, Merle Smith and Lois Stansfield. A Lovely evening was reported by those present. . Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Walters received the happy news that a baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Joe' Walters Monday, Dec. 19, at a Salt Lake hospital. The little new Miss weighed 6 lbs. 7 oz. and will be named Carol Re Nae. Mr. and Mrs. Vere Neilsen d DEATHS Wfton Mrs. Sbelby Llsonbee went to Moab last Thursday to visit their son and daughter-in-law- , Mr. and Mrs. Dale Neilsen. They brought their little grandson, David, back for a visit. They were accompanied as far as Price by their mother, Mrs. Chastia Nielsen who visited relatives there. Mrs. Sylvia Coleman, of HebeT with her City, visited ' Sunday mother, Mrs. Chastia Neilsen. A Primary officers meeting was held Monday evening at the home of Elva Lisonbee. Those present were: Elda Van Tassell, Nelda Murphy. Letta Meyer, Clista Neilsen, Donna and JoyLee Claybum, Lois Stansfield and Judy Shephard. Mr. and Mrs. Alma Smith were called to Utahn by the Illness of Mrs. Smiths mother, Mrs. William Abplanalp. Mrs. Grace Dalgleish Ward Officers Enjoy Party Primary officers, teachers and members of the bishopric of the Myton LDS ward, together with their partners, gathered at the ranch home of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Edwards, Thursday evening for a jolly party. A pleasing program was presented, highlighted by harmonica selections by Bishop Clark Roberts and clever jokes by Roger Smith. Games were enjoyed and delicious refreshments were served to about 35 guests. Mrs. Jennie Taylor, Primary historian, reports the party was a decided success. The opening prayer was given by Kenna Fae Nielson and the meeting was closed by prayer given by Loren Ross. BLUEBIRDS HAVE PARTY The Bluebird girls and parents party was held Wednesday after- noon at the Myton ward chapel. Kenna Ross, teacher of the group, was in charge. A program was presented and delicious refreshments served to the large attendance. . Weekend guests at the home of Mr.' and Mrs. W. E. Burton were Mr. tend Mrs, Bernard Biltz and family of Midvale.' Mrs. Wilbert Rhoades and family left last week for Blythe, Calif, where they joined Mr. Rhoades, who is employed there'. Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Lundgren and family, Mrs, Emil Munz of Duchesne, and Mrs. Frank Griffin and son, Roger, of Whiterocks, were among those from out of town who attended the Xmas program at the Presbyterian church, Sunday morning. Miss Joni Funk, a student at Wasatch Academy, arrived home Friday to spend the holiday vacation with her mother, Mrs. Geo. Funk, and her brother, Howard Funk. Miss Glenna Dart, who is attending Wasatch Academy, at Mt. Pleasant, is home for the holidays to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Dart Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Woodard and daughters, Betty Lee and La Rae, former residents of this district, were greeting old friends, Sunday. The Woodards are now residing in Provo. Mr. and Mrs. Owen Burgess are happy to have their daughter, Sally, home for the Xmas holidays. Sally is a student at the USAC at BUM Crystal Wilcken The Ute Recreation department wishes to announce their annual basketball tournament, to be held this year at the Randlett community building. The first game will be played at 1:30 on the 27th of December. Twenty teams from Vernal, Myton, Roosevelt, Altamont, Whiterocks and Fort Duchesne are participating. The tournament wiir last from the 27th to the 31st and trophies will be given to 1st and 2nd place teams in all three divisions. Six girls teams have entered and six boys teams ranging from 10 to 13, and eight senior teams are competing. Admission will be 35 for adults and 250 for children. Please come out and support your teams. Homie Secakacu is tournament director. rcadi The Farmerette Club held their annual Christmas pSrty, Wednesday evening in the ward house. Thirty-on- e members were present for the gala event. A delicious buffet supper consisting of turkey and all the trimmings was enjoyed by the ladies. The table was very artistically arranged with red tapers and a snow man and snow woman against a blue background. Gifts were exchanged and the club members presented Mary Lois Reichert and a club officers with a gift of appreciation for their contributions to the club the' past year. The new officers elected for the coming year were: Lois Stansfield of Bridgeland, president; Barbara Gilbert, (Arcadia): and Judy Shephard, Arcadia, secretary. The outgoing officers were: Lilly Mae Claybum, Grace Larsen and Calista Neilsen. Mary Lois Reichert has done a very outstanding work with this club in getting very talented and educated people to give talks and demonstrations. It is too bad that there arent more ladies in the county interested in getting these programs going in their communities. n Ann a H JOHN W. BLEAZARD MT. HOME Funeral services were held Monday at 1 p.m. in the Mt. Home LDS ward chapel for John William Bleazard, 72, who died at his home in Salt Lake City of a heart attack. Mr. Bleazard was bom March 3, 1882, in Salt Lake City, a son of Mark H. and Annie I. Danks Bleazard. He was married to Louise May on Dec. 15. 1904, in Peoa, Utah. She died Oct. 18, 1951. He had been a rancher in Mt. Home and had' also followed the vocation of mining at Haley. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Saints. Christ of Latter-da- y and Survivors include; sons daughters, Jack and Grant, Mt. Home; Mark, Talmage; Mrs. Ray (Alice) Oman, Boneta; Chick, of Blackfoot, Idaho; Mrs. Rulon (Rho-da- ) Orton, Monterey Park, Calif.; Bill, Ralph, Fred, all of Salt Lake Row-le- y, City; Mrs. Floyd (Anna Dee) Magna; 33 grandchildren, nine four brothers, two sisters, George and Dale, of Tooele; Deb, Charles, Mrs. J. E. Mills, Mrs. Ford Fairboume, all of Salt Lake City. Burial was in the Mt. Home A group of choir girls will sing Christmas carols, beginning at 1:30 p.m. to entertain the children and parents as they gather for the big event Mr. and Mrs. Frank Liddell and family returned Wednesday from Salt Lake City, where they spent a few days to be with Mr. Liddells mother, Mrs. Lillian Liddell, who underwent surgery at a Salt Lake City hospital, Tuesday. They report the patient is getting1 along nicely. Mr. and Mrs. Lester Maxfield, of Altonah, were visitors, Monday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wil-me- r Murray. Mrs. Maxfield is a sister of Mr. Murray. Miss Josephine Hunt is confined to her home as a result of an accident suffered at her home last week. Mr. and Mrs. Foster Rhoades left Saturday morning for Provo, where' they were planning to spend a few days and then continue on to Concord, Calif., where they plan on spending Christmas and the holidays with their daughter, Mrs. Jack Roark, and family. Sunday School council meeting was held Wednesday at the home of Carole Defa. Mr. and Mrs. Ferrus Giles and Mr. and Mrs. Arvir Rhoades spent Thursday in Springville and Provo, where they visited and did some Xmas shopping. Kermit Poulson and Marvel Moore, of Duchesne stake, were visitors at Sacrament meeting Sunday night and both spoke briefly. Roy Hardman, LaMay Roberts and Glenn Lewis were speakers also. Mr. and Mrs. Leo B. Defa made a trip to Heber and Provo Monday of this week, where they did Christmas shopping. Cecil and Nadine Roberts went to Salt Lake to do Christmas shopping last weekend. They met LaMay who is attending school in Logan, in Salt Lake and she accompanied them home for the holidays. The Relief Society cooked and served a turkey dinner with all to the employees of the local pump station last Saturday. Mrs. Alfonzo Defa and' Judy accompanied Mr. Defa as far as Salt Lake' City last week, where they visited white he went on to Nev. for a few days. Mr. and Mrs, Ted Wilcken and Larry spent last Friday in Salt Lake City, where they attended to business and did some shopping. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wilcken, Sr.,- - Joe Wilcken, Jr. and Leslie and Dennis visited in Hanna on Saturday of last week. Gilbert Chatwin and Joe Curry attended the livestock auction in Roosevelt last Saturday. PRIMARY HAS MEETING A Primary preparation meeting was held Friday evening of last week. After the' lesson, the ladies spent the rest of the evening making costumes for the Christmas . Prophet Honored On Birthday The 150th birthday anniversary of Joseph Smith was honored on Sunday in Sacrament meeting and in all church meetings Sunday. This occasion was observed throughout the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints. The following program was given: Talks on Joseph Smith by Dorothella Murray and Agnes Larsen; solo, The Seer, by William O, Larsen. The opening song was Praise To The Man, and the' closing song was "An Angel From On High. WITNESS MARRIAGE Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Bird went to Salt Lake City Dec. 8 to witness their son, Orval Birds, marriage to Josephine Asay. The marriage was performed in the Salt Lake' Temple. Gardner L. Goodrich home Monday from the Hospital where he has the past four weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Martin cock are staying in with their son, Albert, and Mrs. Harry Latturner of Price visited Saturday and Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Seeley. Home for the holidays from school are Marilyn Jennings, Dale Seeley, Kent Remington, Jo Ann Goodrich, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Duke and Pauline Winkler. Mr. and Mrs, LeRoy Rust and Mrs. Zella Bennion of Mt. Emmons visited in Blubell Monday. Mrs. Mabel Allred was taken seriously ill Wednesday night, but is much improved at this writing; A large crowd from Blubell attended MIA Leadership meeting and the Gold and Green Ball at Mt Home Saturday evening. Mr. Defa returned home last night and Mrs. Defa remained for a longer visit, returning home with Mr. and Mrs. DeLyle Giles and Mrs. Lorin Allred and Jerry, who spent the weekend in Hanna. The date of December 25 as the birthday of Jesus and, hence, Christmas, became generally observed in most Christian nations in the fourth and fifth centuries. Church Program Held On Sunday A Christmas program was presented Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Presbyterian church, by members of the Sunday School classes. Christmas hymns were sung by the choir girls, Gloria Ann Lott, Gloria Grace Courtland, Patricia Lott, Ginger Woods, Arvilla Cuch, Lana Giles and Pat Sue Gentry, accompanied by Mrs. O. A. Dart, director of music. Scripture readings of the birth of Christ, were presented by Mrs. Arthur Brian. A beautifully decorated Xmas tree formed the background for Santa Claus, who was on hand to thrill the children with gifts and goodies of the season. Mrs. Ted Thomas, School Sunday superintendent, was in charge of the program and gave the closing prayer. The Altar of Gratitude was well laden with gifts of food to be distributed during the Xmas season. Myton Prepares For Santas Visit UTAH-COLORAD- PHONE 307-N- J O L. Milton Lott, chairman of tho committee in charge of Santas arrival was assisted by Earl Gingell, representing the Lions Club; Aften Richens, president of Mrs. Fanny Felter, of the the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit No. 5; and Mrs. Florence Lott, of the Ladies Aid of the Presbyterian church.
