Ih Scoot Leader To Attend School In Michigan City Rulon Dean Skinner, Field Scout Executive of the Uintah Basin, left last weekend for Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he will participate in the Tenth National Training Conference from Sept. 2 to 9. Held at the Univercy of Michigan, the highlight of tthe confc.-enc- e will be the launching of the new four year program, Onward for God and My County, which will begin Jan. 1, 1956. Organized to further the training of professional scouters, ap4, 0 0 0 professional proximately scouters from all parts of the United States will gather for the conference held each four years. Mr. Skinner has been assigned by Floyd Loveridge, Scout Executive of the Utah National Parks in four Council, to participate special electives while at the conference: training commissioners, building a functioning commissioner staff, organizing and conductand ing Cub Scout camp program and management. One of the special' features of the conference will be a speech by General D. C. Spry, director of the Boy Scouts International Bureau in London. s, Roosevelt C.C. Is Promoting Call Of Citizens The Roosevelt Chamber of Commerce board of directors, Tuesday, voted to ask the Dunchesne county commissioners and the school board to call a special mass meeting of citizens to discuss finances and taxes of the county. A letter was prepared and will be mailed to these two taxing units, and will also go to city counciLs and town boards of the five incorporated units in the county, urging their support. Purpose of the meeting will be to give an opportunity for men and women serving as county commissioners, school board members and others chosen by the people to represent them, to explain where their tax dollar is being spent and why certain levies are being set. No Date Set No information as to when or where the meeting will be called was available, today. However, immediate action is called for in the letter. Following the Chamber of Commerce meeting, Tuesday. Rowan C. Stutz, superintendent of schools, was contacted and asked to express his opinion relative to such a meeting. His answer was, "I am very happy the Chamber of Commerce has taken such a step, (Continued on Back Page) School Bells On Tuesday To End Kid's Vacation Once again the familiar sound of ringing school bells on the cool, fall morning air, will call hundreds of elementary, junior and senior high school students back to their class room for nine months of instruction. Tuesday, Sept. 6, is the day that will abruptly end a pleasant vacation for teachers and students. False Fire Alarm Brings Rebuff LYLE E. YOUNG Member County Commission HOME TOWN Some practical joker in Duchesne, that turned in a false fire alarm to the City Fire Department, a while back, should be warned that there is a stiff fine for such things. Dont let it happen again, is the warning. These false alarms cost the City expense, as weir as the loss of time to the men who answer the calls. Anyone reporting a fire should as give his name and address so to avoid such nonsense in the In the district schools of the two counties, Duchesne and Uintah, registration for high school and junior high kids will be carried on Tuesday, vhile in the elementary grades, youngsters will get right down to work as instruction is slated to begin. During the week school meetings will be held under the direction of the principals and superintendents, with a two-da- y institute for teachers in both districts having been held on Monday and Tuesday. This is the first time this idea has been tried, and it proved very successful. Wednesday the two districts held outings for all school personnel. Duchesne had their party up Uinta Canyon, and Uintah teachers and other school people went to the hills above Vernal for their day of socializing. Lunch, Some 1800 meals per day are planned for preparation in the eight lunch centers in the district during the coming school term. A $75,000 budget was adopted for operation of the school lunch program during this period. Of this is anticipated $45,000 amount, from school lunch sales at 150 each to pupils and students and 250 each to adults. Another $15,-00- 0 each is anticipated as school lunch revenue from the state and federal governments. School lunches will be served at the eight centers located at Duchesne, Altamont, Tabiona, My-toNeola, Roosevelt Junior High, Roosevelt Elementary and Union. all-da- Mother Goose A Safety School for bus drivers in the Duchesne County School District will be held Sept 2 at the school offices in Duchesne, reports Supt. Rowan C. Stutz. The school, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., is sponsored by the Trades and Industrial Training Division of the State School Office, in cooperation with the Utah Highway Patrol. Mission field Calls Three from Duchesne & Hanna Duchesne Envoys Called From Hanna I A farewell testimonial and party was held Tuesday night, Aug. 30, in the Hanna ward honoring Elder Rex Michie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Michie, prior to his departure for the Mexican Mission, where he will serve as a missionary for the L.D.S. church. Elder Michie will enter the Mission Home on Wednesday, Sept. 7, for a weeks training before leaving for Mexico City, mission headquarters. He is the first member of the Hanna ward for several years to be called to fill a mission. His father is a member of the Duchesne stake presidency. Bands Sought For Fair Parcds; Gcitco Is Charted A last minute plea has gone out from the Duchesne County Fair parade committee . for marching bands to join in the Saturday afternoon parade that is scheduled to get underway on Duchesne main street at 1:30, Sept. 3rd. A band representing Duchesne Duchesne High School is already promised, and a- concerted effort is being made by Grant -Peel, music director at Altamont,- Reginald Burchinal, Duchesne director and Owen F Burgener., Union High Minnie Hamilton is instructor. assisting in getting the band from the smallest high school in the state at Tabiona into the parade. Asked To Report Mr. Peel at Altamont has set Wednesday evening, Aug. 31, at 8 p.m. as the date for a band reunion, and rehersal for the fair is set parade. This for the music room in the new Altamont building. At Duchesne Mr. Burchinal is making a call for all former and potential band members at DHS to meet him at the gym on Friday afternoon. And Community Progress Once again the City of Duchesne is spreading wide TaJ-mag- e; A joint missionary testimonial was held on Sunday evening, Aug. 21, in the Duchesne ward chapel for Elder Norman Abbott and Elder Clive Dee Moon, who have completed their training at the Mission Home in Salt Lake City and left Aug. 31 for their fields of labor. Elder Abbott, who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Abbott and husband of Mona Dee Liddell Abbott, is a graduate of the Duchesne High School, graduating with the class of 1951. The win-n- e will represent the county at the State Fair in Salt "Lake" In a Miss couple of weeks in the Utah contest. Two attendants will be chosen Thursday at 8.00 p.m. to help the Queen to reign over the county fair. Will Lead Parade The late entry on Saturday of Miss Melba Benson and Miss Mary Murphy, both of Roosevelt, swelled the total of contestants to 10. Other entries reported last week include Marilyn Anderson, Genevie' Penfield and Conne Timothy, of Roosevelt; Sally Burgess and Beverly Anderson, Myton; Sharon Hamilton and Pleasy Lewis, Tabiona, and LaMay Roberts, Hanna. The winner and her two attendants will lead the parade on Saturday. and be crowned as the royalty for 1955. Last years Miss Duchesne County was Miss Maura Hurley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emerson Hurley of Roosevelt. Attendants were Sherene Henrie, Neola, and Miss Joyce Lundgren, Duchesne. Plans Are Complete Wm. According to Foy and Var Rosebaum, plans for a successful fair are virtually completed with an expected fine response from farmers, livestock producers, housewives and various Clubs and Future Farmer units in the county expected. Exhibits were being set up during the week. Judging of girls sewing and other exhibits started Wednesday morning at 10 oclock. On Thursday, beginning at 8 am. womens division and girls departments were to be given the critical eye of the judges. Judging will continue in the various homemaking and cooking divisions during Thursday. At 9 a m Friday, a demonstration contest will be held at th Duchesne stake house. All these events and exhibits are under the supervision of Miss Mary Lois Reichert and Mrs. Zelma Lloyd, of the Womens Division. Miss Reichert is director of girls work. Fridays livestock judging will begin at 10 oclock in the hogs class, followed by sheep, beef, dairy cattle. Horticulture and crop judging will also take place beginning at 10 oclock. Junior Livestock Auction and FFA Club At 2 p.m., showmanship contests will be the featured events. After the contests are over and judging has been completed in the 4 H and FFA classes, the second livestock auction will take place. Last year this activity was introduced into the fair program and proved very popular.
