Show t TABIONA S Mrs. Thelma D. Nya The Ralph Smiths See Colorful Indian Pageant Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Smith, accompanied by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Hansen, of Rexburg, Idaho, returned recently from a motor trip to Gallup, New Mexico. They were guests there fo Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Chavez, parents of the two little Indian girls who live with the Smiths each winter and attend school in Tabiona. Irene and Christine Chavez will be back again this winter, the Smiths report. While in Gallup, they attendceremonials ed the Inter-Tribwhich consisted of a parade about two miles long, lasting an hour and a half, a rodeo in the afternoon, and ceremonial dances at night. During the parade, many of of the groups also performed ceremonial dances. Dressed in colorful costumes, it was really quite a sight to see. Also families would ride in the parade in al kinds of all horse-draw- ve- n hicles, and for participating in the parade, the Indian families would receive a bale of hay for their horses and a free meal. During the ceremonial dances, special singing numbers were presented, which the Smiths said were very beautiful. Some would be sung in the Indian language, then repeated in English for the benefit of the approximately 3,000 visitors attending the ceremonies. Many other points of interest were visited enroute, including the Hopi Indian Reservation, Hoteville, Polacca, Window Rock, Ganado, Walpi, Mishon-gonTouva, Oraibi, and Moen-kapbeing especially interesting to the Smiths.
