A number of tourists have been forced to wire home towns for tires to continue their trips, and others have been forced to garage their cars and return home via rail because of the tire . . s i shortage The lack of tires is attributed to the fact that everyone who ran turn a wheel is on the road and they have simply used up the available supply. Utahs roads along with others are becoming littered with blownout tire and .mortorists limp to town on rims, vainly seeking, and willing to pay, for any old tire that will hold air. Utah Fruit Harvest On Utah housewives are trying to with get their canning done sugar from some source or another and" home-grow- n peaches, plums,, berries and early apples are now flooding local markets. ; somewhat Prices are down from a year ago, however, late ! EMU ; 1 strawberries continue to arrive at the big public market place on Salt Lake Citys South West Temple and sell at $3.00 a case. Watermelons are going at 3c a pound, cantaloupes at from $1.00 to $2.00 a crate. Peaches are sell ing for from $1.00 to $2.50 per lug, and Bartlett pears at $3.50 per bushel. Peaches appear to be plentiful and are of a better than usual grade; Utah cantaloupes never had finer flavor. In the meantime, the U. S. Department of Agriculture- has Stoutly denied Governor Herbert B. Maws request for extra canning sugar for Utah housewives. "There is a world, shortage of - f 7,500,000 tons of sugar, the De- partment informed the Governor. Would Employ Safety Analyst The State Road Safety Division has recommended that a safety analyst be employed to sift traffic accident reports received by the State Tax Commission's Drivers License Division. It Is the opinion of Utah safety experts that all record of accidents causing more than $25 worth of damage should be analyzed by an expert and the findings made available to local law enforcement bodies. Open House Held For Andrew Clemons On 76th Birthday Mrs. Nellie Feller was hostess at 'an open house held Friday af- ternoon, August 23rd, in honor of her brother, Andrew Clemons, who was celebrating his 76th birthday. Gomm MYTON Mrs. Ada Bowman Sweat 19. wife of Lloyd Sweat, of My ton, died Saturday at 8:00 p.m. in a Heber hospital of complications fdllowiing childbirth. The deceased was a daughter of Wm. and Olive Clegg Bowman of Heber and the only granddaughter of the late Henry X. Clegg, Heber pioneer. She was born June 15, 1927 in Heber and had made her home there till the time of her marriage. She attended Wasatch High School and LDS Seminary. Survivors include her husband and infant son, her parents, two brothers, Roland H. and Dale William Bowman and a grandmother. Mrs. Mary B. Lloyd of Heber. Miss Wilkens and Miss Madsen were together in the Red Cross and operated a Canteen in Naples, Italy. to the Northwestern Association of accredited high schools and colleges. The certificate of membership is in custody of the high school principal, Mr. J. Robert Gillispie. Credits are recognized by all member schools. Credits Duchesne and from Altamont, Tabiona High Schools are recognized by all west and midwest colleges. Madsens Entertain With Open House Mrs. George Mr. and Mrs. John P. Madsen a large number of friends at an open house Tuesday night, August 27, in honor of their daughter, Emily, who from Italy returned recently where she served 30 months with the American Red Cross. Miss Madsen, who enjoys a hobby of collecting antiques, old silverware, pottery, exquipite china, jewelry and trinkets from foreign lands, brought back a large collection she obtained while travelling in the European Theater. These were all displayed and the guests spent a goodly part of their time examining and admiring the collection. In December, 1943, Emily left her position as private secretary to Sen. Elbert D, Thomas of Utah to join the Red Cross. She left for Italy immediately. Miss Madsen recently received an Award and Letter of from President Truman for outstanding work in the American Red Cross. Miss Madsen, who has spent very nttle time in Duchesne the past eight years will teach in the Duchesne school system this fall. entertained Anderson Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Davies were in Price last Wednesday on business. Monday, Sept. 2 (Labor Day), has been designated, by the Rodeo Committee, as "clean-u- p day at the City Park in preparation for the Annual Duchesne Cpunty Stampede and Rodeo to be held Sept. 13 and 14. All citizens of the town and anyone interested in the Stampede and Rodeo are urged to come out and bring a hoe, rake or shovel and help to clean up the grounds. A new rodeo corral is under construction, all stock pen fences have been whitewashed and the race track has been improved putting it in good condi Cion. According to the Committee, several worthwhile prizes will be given away during the big two-da- y event and Duchesne and Duchesne county is looking forward to a bigger and better rodeo and stampede. Howell in Provo at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Vedella Carroll Mr. Howell was a former resident of Ioka. He came here at the opening of the reservation. Funeral services were held in Upalco Tuesday. Burial was in the Roosevelt cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Gentry, Mrs. F, H. Story, Vernon Brumett and Ilusted Story spent Friday evening with Mr. and Mrs. Devon Gentry of Myton. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Angus were Salt Lake visitors this week.
